why I won’t be talking to the other parents any more
I took Henry to a birthday party on Saturday, mostly kids from school, and another mom, whom I had met only briefly, once, at Starbucks, said (without making eye contact), Are you as nervous as I am about your teacher conference next week? I’m so stressed I can hardly sleep.
No, I said, a little baffled.
She went on: I always want to say, just cut to the chase, are you kicking him out yet?
Oh, I said, still baffled. Then I thought to add, I’ve already spoken with Henry’s teacher, and he’s going to stay in 5-Day next year. So I guess I’m not worried because I already know how his conference ends!
He’s not going on to kindergarden? she said, clearly horrified.
Nope. He’s not ready.
She looked me full in the face and then turned away and started talking to someone else.
