thirty days of The Working Closet
Welcome to November! Yes, I know it’s November 2, but it’s Monday, so we’ll pretend the month is starting today. Because I have a project for all of you, and there’s no time like Monday to start a project. Right?Right. This is a fun project, you all: We’re reviving The Working Closet Flickr pool with thirty days of outfits. Thirty days of your outfits, I mean. And mine, too, but I already know what I’m wearing. I want to see what you’re wearing. So get out your camera (or cell phone, whatever) and show me.
Jacket: J. Crew. Everything else: Old Navy
The Working Closet Flickr pool started in August of 2007 as part of The Working Closet blog. The goal was to help members figure out what was in their closets and how they looked in their clothes. In the two plus years since we launched, the group has grown to over a thousand members, and the pool contains over five thousand images.
That’s a lot of outfits.
From the beginning, the idea was to replace traditional fashion media with an interactive community, one composed of women who were wearing a variety of sizes and shopping at a range of places. And while we defined ourselves as “working” women, we were pretty liberal about what constituted work:
The rationale is simple: seeing what other women are wearing to work (even if your office doubles as your kitchen table and your boss is still wearing diapers or napping every day) can inspire our own wardrobe choices. Fashion magazines are a wonderful source of information, but only if you’re planning to replace your entire closet every season. Seeing what other working moms are doing with that black skirt from five years ago and the ubiquitous jean jacket can actually be far more useful.
I’m pleased to say that it has totally worked out that way; I get good advice and great ideas from the participants all the time. The rules are simple: Take your picture each day and add it to the pool. That’s it! If you need more details, there’s a simple FAQ at The Working Closet blog. But the bottom line is this: It doesn’t matter what you do all day or what you’re wearing — let’s see it.

Love this project, so glad you’re revisiting it. During a bout of insomnia a few months back I went through all of the posted outfits. Now that I have a new job and no longer working at home I’m needing some inspiration. I work in a casual office environment and jeans are fine but I want to look put together so I love seeing the ideas people have. I’m not a morning person so having those pics to draw from in my head really helps me pull an outfit together. Thanks!
