things that are weighing on my mind

1. My hair is a disaster. I had it cut two weeks ago, and it’s already a mess. Also it is longer on one side than on the other, which makes me crazy. I think I need to change stylists, AGAIN, which REALLY makes me crazy.

2. On Sunday, we put mulch in the flower beds, over the flowers we planted on Saturday. I wound up with a wee sliver of redwood mulch in my finger, which REALLY hurt. Today it worked its way out and now my finger is fine. The human body is an amazing thing, you know.

3. Charlie has had at least one gigantic sobbing meltdown every day for nearly a week. I think he’s had it with the broken arm and the strep and the itching and the medicine and the missing school. And while I wish he would stop crying about his PANTS already, I feel for him; I would like to lie down and cry about my hair, for example (see #1).

4. My birthday weekend was lovely, clouded only by intermittent moments of badly behaved children, which is pretty much the norm around here.  But the entire quart of Thai peanut chicken salad that I ate made it all better.

5. I’m getting a new camera! Probably a Cannon Rebel, unless anyone has any other suggestions.  It needs to be very VERY simple to use and VERY easy to carry, because I am a delicate flower with a short attention span.  And a limited budget.  Just so you know.

And if you have any ideas about my hair, I would love to hear those, too.

Today is Tuesday, which means that while I was worrying about my hair and marvelling at the fact that my body PUSHED OUT A WOOD CHIP, I was also writing about other things, like what to wear to a new job and why the white handbag is the Perfect Bag for Summer. Go, read! You might learn something.

  1. Well I have a Canon Rebel and I love it! I can use all the manual features, but I can put it on auto for anyone else if I want to hand it off for a while. It takes beautiful pictures and everyone who has seen mine, seen the pictures or used my camera has loved it. And it is light and easy to carry, so no worries there.

    I say it’s a great choice!

  2. Not to complicate your decision, but I’m a photographer and would recommend Nikon over Canon. My experience with digital cameras is that Canon is superior for commercial use but Nikon is superior for portrait photography. The color is much more pleasing. I assume that since you have children this is very important to you. The Nikon D40 is very easy to use and a fabulous entry level camera. Good luck!

  3. Take heart in the facts that:

    1. My hair will probably always be worse.
    2. Even I learned (kinda) to use my Rebel.

  4. I wanted to put in a vote for my camera. I have a Nikon Coolpix 3100. I think it is a little bulkier than the Rebel but it is very easy to use and takes nice pictures. It has also proven to be quite sturdy. I thought that all was lost when I dropped it on the hard pavement on vacation but stretching one of P’s ponytail holders around it seems to be holding it together quite well.

Also, I found this page on flickr and I thought I’d share it with you. Cool, huh?

  5. Oh man. I just cannot recommend Nikon enough. Get thee one pronto. Easy to use, and the photos are just….so unreal.

Do a bit of research on them. There is the D40x, or the new d60. I have the D80…. it is a bit more expensive but worth every penny.

You can’t go wrong with a Nikon SLR.

  6. 1) my hair needs help too.
    2) I gardened on sunday and just now realized (although I swear I’ve showered) that I have some sort of weird thorn thing stuck in my upper thigh
2A) evidentally I have a freaky way of ignoring pain when I’m too busy to notice
    3) my six-yr-old is fuhreaking out on a daily basis. about socks. and hair ties. and people looking at her when she’s fuhreaking out.
    4) yay for happy birthday weekends!
    5) we have a canon rebel and I figured out on my own how to take pics and download them which makes me happy I was talked into letting adam buy it.
5A) okay so what really happened is that he bought it and then told me later how much it cost and I didn’t make him move out.
    same diference.

  7. Yay Canon! Nikon’s are good too, but I LOVE my Canon. I started with the Reber, and it is SUPER easy!

I *do* read your articles, I’m just too busy/lazy too comment all of the time. I really appreciate them, though, and should tell you that more often :)

  8. I have a stylist I love with all my heart and soul… but she’s up in Edmond. If you don’t mind the drive, I think she’d be well worth it. Email me if you’re interested in her info. Seriously, for TEN YEARS I had nothing but a string one-haircut-stands (had come to expect them, actually) until I found her. And now I am in a serious, committed relationship. I love her the most because if you hate it, she will make it her mission to fix it. For free. And then she takes notes for next time. I’ve never had a stylist take notes before.

  9. Nikon. Just do it.

  10. Love my Rebel–highly recommend it.

Question? How does your hair know when you are sick or depressed? I have experienced a loss and must read a poem at the service on Monday. My hair has heard bout this and has decided to mourn with me.

  11. Susan, where can I find the gorgeous white handbag in your blogher post?

Switching hair products always seems to help me. Good luck!

  12. I have a stylist here in Bethany that I really like. The salon’s not fancy-schmancy, but they do good work there. At least, I haven’t walked out with a bag over my head, which compared to some of the hairdressers I’ve had in the past, is saying a lot. :)

  13. I love my Canon, but I suppose there is a possibility that A Nikon could be just as good.

Your hair is causing me to panic…Who will do MY hair when I move to OKC? Who can I trust? ACK!!!

  14. Dude!
I just bought a digital Canon Rebel yesterday!
Haven’t had much time to play with it yet, but I’ll let you know how it fits with my slow pregnancy brain and my aversion to carrying around big purses. (We bought a small case so that I can put it in my purse instead of having 2 bags with me all the time)
