The Land of Nod wants to make your holidays cuter

Holiday shopping wears me out. More specifically, the part of the holidays where my kids make random, haphazard lists of junk they don’t need wears me out. Every year, I spend weeks trying to outsmart them and come up with really cool, interesting things to give them for Christmas, toys and games that they will still be playing with next year (or maybe even the year after). But it’s hard to find really fantastic kids stuff — unless you know where to look.

This year, I’m looking at The Land of Nod.

The Land of Nod has beautiful things for children — games and crafts and costumes and decor — things that you cannot find at the mall. Paige is modeling The Land of Nod’s petal pusher tutu; it is beautifully made and fits sizes 2 to 5, so it will be around for a long time. It’s available in three colors for $29, and arrives in a gauzy bag that makes it look very much like a delicate ballet slipper. It is truly lovely. (I kind of wish it came in my size.)

The Land of Nod’s toys are the kind that encourage kids to think for themselves, to be creative and imaginative. In a world of animatronic and robotic toys, this is a breath of fresh air. Plus, the cuteness is almost unbearable.

This holiday season, The Land of Nod wants you to have a little cuteness — and a lot of creativity — at your house, and I agree; we’ve teamed up to offer two Friday Playdate readers a chance to take home some cute.

LONSewKit

Today we’re giving away this wee kids sewing set; the set includes a working sewing machine (yes really!), 4 bobbins, 2 machine needles, threader, felt, ric rac, pin cushion, sewing needles, straight pins, scissors, thread, buttons, measuring tape, thimble, ribbon trim, and two yards of floral fabric. Just imagine what a really clever kid could make with all that.

Maybe a tutu!

To enter, leave a comment on this post telling us who you will share the sewing kit with. Contest ends Friday at midnight; winner will be announced on Saturday. And! We’re giving away one more great toy from The Land of Nod over the weekend, so watch for that.

Thanks to The Land of Nod for providing the tutu, and to Rita for providing the baby. They both live at Rita’s house now (the tutu and the toddler).

  1. Ohhhh, my daughter and I were just talking about learning to sew. She is almost 8, and this would be perfect for a Christmas gift! She’s generally NOT a girly girl, so finding a special gift for her has been tricky. This fits the bill!

  2. My girls would love to sew!

  3. My Mom was/is a great seamstress. She made baby clothes for us…even clothes when we were a bit older…ALWAYS our Halloween costumes, all the window treatments in our house (and the window treatments in my Sister & Brother-In-Law’s new apartment–she’ll do mine way out here in Cali when I have some nice windows to treat), and even made me a princess bed (complete with valence & dust ruffle and it goes on and on…)…but she always said her biggest regret in raising my Sister and me, was never teaching us how to sew. I don’t think i *really* cared to learn back then, but now, well, it would be a nice skill to have! I’d give this to my Mom so she could teach the adorable little girl next door how to sew…and when it’s time, she’ll teach her grandchildren, as well :).

  4. How cool is this? I broke out the sewing machine last week to make some fleece scarves and my daughter, 7, was so intrigued! I would love to give this to her so she could sew right along with me. I’ll keep my fingers crossed! thanks for the opportunity!!

  5. I would share the sewing machine with my 3-year-old daughter. She doesn’t sit still for long, but I think she would really enjoy figuring out how the machine works and asking a million “why?” questions.

  6. I would give this to my niece and then play with it myself! How cute!

  7. I would share this with my six year old son, believe it or not, who is really interested in sewing (although he pronounces is zo-ing, why I do not know).

  8. My Mother In Law is a sewing goddess…and though I have two boys, Charley and Henry, I would love to give it to the three of them…however, I also have this new little niece that might love it too. But heck, just because I have boys doesn’t mean they can’t know how to sew a button on their own shirt.

  9. ooooh, both of my girls would love this, so it would be a hard choice.

  10. My son is a Project Runway geek; I can only imagine what he would create with this!

  11. My niece is turning 7 this year and her birthday is December 22…what a perfect Birthday/Christmas gift for her!!!!

  12. Oh my gosh, that is too cute! I am a sewist, but my sister is not. I think this would be great for my niece and my sister both! :)

  13. A friend of mine has a four year old daughter, Alex, who keeps asking for a sewing machine and they are totally and completely broke SO I would give it to them to give to her from Santa Claus. This would give them extra money to spend on the holidays that I know they do not have…

  14. I would count the days until my daughter was old enough to do sewing with me, or give it to my niece who is a bit older. No matter what, it would get used. (even if I was sewing the tutu)

  15. I have a 7 year old niece who would love a sewing kit. She is very creative and very patient for a 7 year old. I learned to sew when I was young and it is a skill I have always valued.

  16. I would give it to my daughter Gracie. She watches me sew all the time, and wants to learn so bad.

  17. I would have to give it to one of my three nieces because I don’t think one of my three boys would be into. But maybe they would?

  18. i would share this with my (almost) 8 year old daughter, who is just discovering a love of crafts. i taught her how to knit a couple of weeks ago, sewing seems like the next logical step!

  19. I would share it with my niece.

  20. My daaughter, Emma would LOVE this!

  21. I would give this to my 6 year old son and 4 year old daughter. They just love to hand sew homemade ugly dolls. Now we could mass produce them and give them as gifts for friends and family. The sewing machine…a gift that keeps on giving!

  22. My grandson is a little young (18 mo) yet for me to share my quilting passion with him but I do have a 4 year old great-niece who would so love this. I think I will wander over and check out the tutu for her.

  23. My oldest daughter (6) is just getting interested in sewing, and wants to use my machine, so this would be perfect for her. My middle daughter (3) has been interested in sewing forever…at 18 months she would sit next to me while I sewed and pin little scraps of fabric together for hours! They would have so much fun with this!

  24. My beautiful 5 year old daughter!!!

  25. I would send it to my cousins who are just the right age to think this is the coolest thing ever! :)

  26. Ohhhh My daughter is begging for sewing machine right now. It’s not in the budget and she would be thrilled for her birthday to get this.

  27. I’d share it with my just-about-to-be-5 neice!

  28. I would share with my nieces, who are 5. They would LOVE this!

  29. I sew all the time but lately my 8 year old son has expressed interest in learning. I would share this with him. What a great thing to learn. Boy or girl!

  30. I can’t believe this came up. I have been thinking how I would like to be creative with clothes for my girls, but I have only sewn a couple of times in my life. Also, I bought my oldest daughter one of those fashion design toys for Christmas. Just think she could make her own clothes and maybe teach me a thing or two. So far she has taught me to think outside the box.

  31. My 8yo daughter would love this.

  32. My daughter’s been asking me to make a doll with her. Since I don’t sew anything other than buttons, this presents a problem. She would love this kit, and perhaps I could learn along with her.

  33. I would love to share this with my great niece - Gracie. My daughters had a little sewing machine and they loved it. It would be great fun for this aunt and cousins to do with Gracie!

  34. i would totally gift this to my 6yo niece! that machine is just the cutest i’ve ever seen. thanks!

  35. I would share this with my Daisy troop (16 girls!) and Junior troop (6 girls, who would like very much not to need to rely on their busy moms and sew their own patches on instead). Darling tutu!

  36. My 8 y.o. daughter learned to sew at camp this summer and loved it!

  37. My daughter desperately wants to learn to sew. She would love this!

  38. You mean I’d have to share it?

In that case, I know my neice would love this. I can see her spending hours designing clothes for her dolls. And since he just loves to do anything his sister does, my nephew would probably want in on the action. How many Matchbox car cozies are in this boy’s future? And how many kids do we have working on this machine before we constitute a sweatshop???

  39. My daughter would love this, and I would love teaching her how to sew… er, right after I have MY mom teach ME to sew. :o)

  40. I am always looking for something different for my daughter who lives in a house full of boys. This would be PERFECT!!!

  41. My daughter would love this!

  42. I have three daughters, who will just have to learn to share with each other.

  43. My sweet niece (one of the 7 of them) whose name I got for Christmas :-) She would love it and be making stuff for everyone!

  44. Oh my Peanut would adore that sewing kit and my mom would get a huge kick out of helping her with it! Too bad Peanut is too big for the tutu! Cuteness!!!

  45. ooh i love land of nod! their stuff is amazingly beautiful and well-made. thanks for sharing this contest with us!

i’d share the sewing kit with my oldest daughter. i’m a bit of a hobby sewer and she’s always hovering near by, watching everything. i know she’d love to have her own little sewing machine!

  46. my son wants to sew so bad! really-he wants to make pillows, and curtains, and…this would be awesome. my daughter would love it, too!

  47. I don’t know just how wee this is, but I think it would be perfect for my (on Saturday turning)13 year old daughter Leah. She wants to learn and has a great imagination, so I think she’d adore it.

    Though everything would be “Twilight”.

    *sigh*

  48. My daughter really wants to learn to sew. She is 8 and this sewing machine would be so perfect for her! She already has that little designer mind with the way she dresses.

  49. Love Land of Nod! My 7 & 9 year old daughters would love to sew alongside Mom!

  50. My 11-year-old daughter loves to make things–pottery, miniature furniture for her dollhouse, origami animals–and she’s shown an interest in designing and sewing clothes. I’d love to give her a sewing machine and see what her little hands devise.

  51. My daughter would LOVE a sewing machine, although this would mean I would need to grab mine from my mom’s house and finally learn how to thread the bobber! what fun it would be…

  52. My son is always sitting with me, wanting to help when I use my sewing machine, so of course I would give it to him! He is still a little young to do it by himself, but he would have so much fun! I have been thinking about getting him a pretend sewing machine, but that one is so much cooler!! Thanks!

  53. My daughter would love the sewing kit. I love Land of Nod. Their stuff is great!

  54. This wonderful gift would be for my 7 1/2 year old daughter. My mother is an amazing seamtress and my daughter has dreamed of learning how to sew like her Noni. I would love to give her that opportunity.

  55. Yes - oh please!!! I would love to give this to my oldest niece, she would love it!!!

  56. My niece is nearly 7, and has developed quite an interest in fashion. She’s been watching the fashion shows on Project Runway, and is very opinionated about who should stay and who should go. She’s started sketching her own designs and just asked her mom to teach her to sew. This would be a perfect gift for her!

  57. I would give it to my grandson Charley who always looks longingly at my sewing machine when he comes to visit. My sewing room becomes a nursery for his little brother Henry when they are at my house.

  58. I would share the sewing kit with my 7 year-old son. He loves crafts and I can see him really getting into creating things with the sewing machine. Maybe he can finally darn all those socks I keep meaning to fix.

  59. My fourteen year old could mess around well with this and begin to teach our foster children as they get older. Sewing is such a valuable skill.

  60. My mom just started teaching my 9 year old daughter how to sew. She has already added “sewing machine” to her Christmas wish list. This would be perfect!

  61. Ohhh. My best friend’s little girl would love that.

  62. Oh, how I would love to share this with my niece, Violet! That has to be the cutest sewing machine I have ever laid eyes on!

  63. My daughter would LOVE that sewing machine! She is the craftiest 9yr old I know and she would love to add sewing to her list of amazing abilities! Plus, this might be the one craft that can keep her busy for the ENTIRE Christmas morning (or at least until 9am)!!

  64. LOVE Land of Nod.

Definitely my 7 year old neice. She’s my girly-girl outlet. My boys would somehow manage to turn it into a weapon.

  65. While I’d like to keep it myself (is 40 too old to learn to sew?), I’d give it to my niece.

  66. OOOOOOh, my just turned 7 year old daughter would love this! Sewing is something I have always wanted to learn, but haven’t found the time for yet.

  67. For KK Alton, my crafty 7 year old…..

  68. My daughter Lucy would love this for Christmas!

  69. My almost 6 year old would love this. He has been sewing with his grandmother his whole life.

  70. My son and daughter would love the sewing machine. They want me to teach them - but putting them behind the wheel of my big and fast machine scares me (maybe it’s just because I’ve sewn over my finger before and I know how much it hurts!).

  71. My sweet granddaughter Mia would love the sewing kit!

  72. My daughter Emma is still only 20 months, but in a couple years, I know she’d love it! And she could “help” me use it in the meantime :)

  73. My daughter would love to have her very own machine and I would love nothing more than to teach her how to use it. My heart skips a little beat just thinking about it.

  74. My daughter would love this!

  75. I would share it with my almost 9 year old daughter who loves to be crafty and is saddle with a mother who is craft disabled.

  76. My daughter desperately wants to sew “like Mommy!”

  77. My daughter and I could learn together! I’ve always wished I could sew.

  78. Oh! Definitely my 8yo daughter and my 6yo son (he’d love it, too, I’m sure of it)! My fingers are so crossed.

  79. I would share it with my granddaughter. What a wonderful way to teach her how sew like my mother taught me.

  80. I would share this with my friend’s daughter. My friend and her husband are separating and will most likely divorce. Her daughter is so confused and I think learning to sew with this machine could be a great thing.

  81. OMG, this is exactly what my daughter would LOVE for Christmas. She loves doing crafts and desperately wants to learn to sew (and knit). Sadly, the crafty-gene skipped my generation, but her grandmother would love to teach her! This would be her dream come true!

  82. My daughter would love this…she is constantly trying to sneak her way onto my sewing machine. So cute!

  83. Thinking maybe my older daughter and I could figure out how to make doll clothes for all the baby dolls that end up disrobed by my younger daughter. Or maybe she’ll keep it simple and make blankets for the dollies instead. Or high fashion for herself. Endless possibilities…

  84. My daughter, who loves all type of crafts, would just love this!

  85. My daughter Lily spends so much of her time with me in my sewing room. She has asked many times to learn herself, but I haven’t put her in front of the machine yet. This Land of Nod machine would be such a perfect present for her. She would be so excited to have her very own machine.

  86. ooo, ooo, I would love to share this with my little girl! She just turned 4 and it might be a little complex for her now, but I bet she would really dig it. We like to get artsy/crafty so we would think of some cool projects!

  87. I would share this with my niece!
    laurenisrocknroll at hotmail dot com

  88. I would give it to my daughter. She loves to create things, and this would bring it to a whole new level for her!

  89. oh..love land of nod!! This would be perfect give to my project runway loving daughter!!

  90. As a mother of three boys, I grab my niece, Caroline, to craft with me. She would LOVE this for Christmas.

  91. My 5-year old any I would have hours of fun with this one!

I agree Land of Nod is cool, just kinda pricey.

  92. I have two daughters, who would love this.

    LOVE IT, I MEAN

  93. That kit is absolutely adorable! I would give it to my daughter when she’s a bit older.

  94. My 7 year old daughter Eleanor would love that. She loves hand sewing, makes clothes and bags for her dolls constantly, and she’s asked me to get her a sewing machine, but I’ve been hesitant since I don’t sew. She’d think I was the Best Mama Ever if that showed up for her this year!

  95. My 5-yr old daughter would just be so happy to set up her own sewing machine next to mine, and make projects together! I am crossing my fingers! Thank you for such a cool giveaway!

  96. Oh, my daughter would love that!

  97. I am not sure I could share it right away. I would play with it myself and show it off to my daughter. This would make her want it more. Then I would come up with some kind of competition to make her work for it. Then I would give it to her, she would love it and use it everyday BECAUSE she wanted it and worked hard to get it. She is just like that. I on the other hand, wokring for something makes me frustrated… I just want it and would not share it till her whining put me over the edge!

  98. Do I lose points for mispelled words? Sorry. I was so excited I just typed and sent!

  99. I would give the sewing machine and kit to my daughter, who wants to sew “just like mommy and grandma.” I can imagine lots of fun projects with her sewing beside me!

  100. oooh, I’m thinking my niece because she is the most fabulous and creative 9 year old I know!

  101. Oooooo… so precious! I would give the sewing machine to my nieces. They’re so cute and creative (and my daughter already has a sewing machine)!

  102. Oh, I love this! I would give it to a friend’s 9yr-old daughter. She’s super creative and would have so much fun with this, I’m sure.

  103. This gorgeous toy would find a home with my equally gorgeous niece Skylar, for her tenth birthday, I know she would love it to pieces….today is my lucky day, Friday the 13th (my son was born on Friday the 13th, 7 weeks early, we consider it a very lucky day!), so perhaps that will give my entry a little extra boost! ;-) (I know it’s random, but ya never know!)

  104. My daughter has requested a sewing machine for Christmas this year! I spotted this one online, but wasn’t sure I could justify the cost. But, free is always best!!

  105. I would love to give the sewing kit to my 10 year old daughter! She is really ready to start doing these types of things.

  106. Ooh…do you think it would work for a middle aged woman? ha! No, I would give it to my granddaughter…How fun…thanks for the contest…

  107. My Mom taught me sewing at a young age. I would love to carry on the tradition with my daughter.

  108. My niece! My daughter would grumble that she should have it, but it would have to be a gift for my niece. She is so crafty. She has asked for a sewing machine for Christmas. She would use it often of that I am sure. Thanks!

  109. My niece would love a set like this!

  110. […] still time to win a sewing kit from The Land of Nod! But not much, so enter fast. Contest ends at midnight.) Posted by Susan @ 8:13 pm • good people […]

  111. I’d share the kit with my daughter - she’s excited by all the stuff I sew around the house!

  112. I’d share it with my two neices, the two most creative little girls. They love being crafty and their creativity amazes me every day.

  113. My daughter asked for her first sewing kit for Christmas. This would be perfect for her!

  114. I would either save it for my daughter (she’s a little young now) or give it to my niece. She would LOVE it!!

  115. This is the cutest thing I’ve seen today!

  116. I would give it my daughter Emma so that we could both learn to sew together. Thanks Susan!!

  117. M sweet 10-year old goddaughter would love this :) If I don’t win, I think I’ll still be getting it for her. I love Land of Nod!

  118. I would definitely share this with MC and Harper–my six and four year old. They’ve been itching to sew since I pulled my machine out over the summer! Hooray!

  119. I’d probably try to share it with my little boys, but when my heart breaks from their complete lack of enthusiasm in anything non-lego, I’d find a very happy taker in mother-daughter sewing/knitting circle I know of.

  120. Adorable! I’d share with my 5yo who’s been after me to sew for her toy horses and what better way to do that than make her do it herself. ;-)

  121. My daughter would LOVE the sewing kit. Any my mother would love to teach her how to sew!

  122. Mom of three boys here, who probably aren’t interested. The thing is, my boys attend a school where 3/4 of the children are on a free/reduced price lunch. I have a couple sweet little girls in mind, who I think would be beyond thrilled.

  123. My daughter and her friends would have a lot of fun with this! Thanks for the chance to win!

  124. my friend’s daughter.

they created/live in a safe house downtown- pouring their lives out for the broken… EVERY SINGLE DAY they serve the homeless and the destitute here in oklahoma city.

Her little girl (keira) would love this!

  125. Sam always “helps” me when I sew, and by helps I mean turns every knob on my sewing machine so it is nearly impossible to work. I don’t mind (MUCH) but I would surely be tickled pink to give him his very own.

  126. I love this little sewing kit and would share it with the “Queen of Crafting”–my daughter. She is only 5 1/2, but spends all of her time making projects and watching grandma on her big sewing machine. I think she could make some amazing things with it!

  127. I would share this with both my children, Elliot (6) and Audrey (4). Recently I was convinced by the performing arts teacher to make a theater curtain that measured 10′ x 36′. Both kids helped with the sewing, a little like you would imagine small children driving a car - I would press the gas while they steered the fabric. It’s too bad that the dials are daisies as Elliot would assume it is Audrey’s machine that he would be borrowing. Do they carry a more gender-neutral or masculine version? Boys can sew! Ask Tim Gunn :) Regardless a small sewing machine would not gather dust in our house.

  128. I would share this with my budding fashion designer 6 year old daughter. She watches Project Runway every week and then practices her runway walk/model pose. She makes paper and tissue clothing for her Barbie dolls. Recently, she’s moved up to fabric scraps and ribbons. If she could learn to sew, she’d be thrilled!

This little machine would be wonderful for her!

  129. How much fun! We could make things together.

  130. I have been begging my auntie to teach me to sew, and would LOVE to include my daughter too!

    Fingers crossed!

  131. I would actually use this to teach MYSELF to sew, but I would generously share it with my 4 and 6 year old kids!

  132. Oh my! I would share this with my daughter! She wants a sewing kit for Christmas!

  133. I would love to begin to teach Molly how to sew!

  134. me me me! So I can learn to sew and hem my own pants!

  135. Ooh, I would love to learn to sew…and teach my daughter Rosey, too!

  136. I would love to share this with my two daughters - thanks!

  137. I would give this to my 8-year-old niece!

  138. super cute!
