The Great Mascara Road Test, take … uh, four?

Despite my paid public assertions that there is an ideal waterproof mascara, I am still searching (and for the record, the Blinc stuff kind of freaked me out, with the wee little TUBES that WASH OFF and FALL INTO THE SINK LIKE THE LEGS OF SOME WEIRD BUG). Today, when I was in the grocery for what I swear to you was the SECOND time in TWO DAYS, I grabbed a tube of L’Oreal Lash Out, in black.

Because Belinda, among others, swore by it. And I totally trust Belinda. And the rest of you, too, of course. But mostly Belinda.

She was not wrong.

because Belinda said so
I think I need some mascara on those bottom lashes, don’t you? Or SOMETHING.

So far, I love it — the mascara wasn’t goopy, the brush is to DIE for, and my lashes are long and full. No smudging yet, but I’ve only had it on for four hours.

Tomorrow, in the interest of ACTUAL road testing, I will wear the L’Oreal on ONE eye and the okay-but-not-fantastic Clinique on the OTHER eye. And we’ll see how they hold up through an ENTIRE day of my rock-and-roll life.

Now I need you all to find me a good tutorial on Eyelash Curlers.  Seriously.  And maybe a little something about applying eye liner while you’re at it.  Thanks!

  1. Thanks for doing all this work on my behalf. ;)

  2. OK, I’m a strawberry blond since forever, but with sad, too long, but totally thin lashes on the bottom. I don’t mascara them, but here’s what I do.

I rub the brush a couple of times back and forth right at the very base of the lash line (on, um, the underside of the lashes). Then blink IMMEDIATELY. A little of the mascara from the top will smudge onto the bottom and give you just a little dark line there. Voila.

I put liner (on the bottom) between the lashes and the eye. Very, very carefully. And only on the outside half of the eye, unless I’m going whole hog with foundation, etc.

  3. I swear by an eyeliner brush and a nice dark brown eyeshadow. I wet the brush with Visine (a tip from a makeup artist) and then dip it in the shadow. I line the top and the bottom. It seriously doesn’t smudge and I’m able to put it on so much easier than trying to draw a line with a pencil. I can put it on lightly or darken it up a bit for night time. I tried buying a cheap eyeliner brush and it just didn’t have a crisp enough edge (if that makes sense) so invest in a good quality brush. I just use my L’Oreal eye shadow.

  4. L’Oreal Lash Out in Black is awesome! Has been my brand for 10+ years and hasn’t failed me yet. Great brush, lengthens lashes, and NEVER smudges. Good luck:)

  5. The little bug legs in the sink would creep me out, too.

  6. I use shadow and a brush to line my eyes, too, although I usually keep the brush dry. I learned how to do it when I had make up applied at the Bobbi Brown counter over 15 years ago (can I be that old?!). I have a Bobbi Brown travel size (short handle) liner brush that is great, and I’ve only replaced it once in all that time. I occasionally try a pencil, but I always go back to the shadow/brush soon after. Much easier, and a cinch to make it light or heavy, for day or evening. Just use less shadow and/or a lighter color shadow.

  7. For eyeliner, I use MAC’s stubborn brown pencil and then smudge it with their “smudger” brush (don’t know the real name). It is a really nice look and their is no line to it at all.

  8. this is the eyelash curler to get: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P8119&categoryId=C17300

with the new mascara and the curler, you will be unstoppable! maybe i need new mascara. at least to look like i was up less than four times last night with the kids!

  9. The easiest eyeliner out there is Clinique Quickliner for Eyes. The crayon is really really soft, there is the smudger on the other side. It doesn’t come off, and it also makes a good creamy base for eyeshadow. I find that shadow stays longer if you use a cream shadow as a base so it has something to stick to. It also comes in 18 million colors. Also, I really like Sephora’s shadow brushes and they are fairly affordable. Clinique Touch Base for Eyes is also good stuff.

Get that and a Shu Uemura and you are set.

  10. Ditto on the She Uemura and I love Make Up Forever’s Aqua Eyes. Tug free, will not budge and comes in lots of colors. Avail. at Sephora too.

  11. I love, love , love Lash Out. ‘Tis the only way to go.

  12. Wow, I’m gonna have to try the Lash Out. And Susan, if you try the lash curler, you must report. I’ve been (idly) wondering for years if such a thing would actually work on my stick-straight, fine, thin, blonde lashes. Oh, and I never ever mascara my bottom lashes. Instant smudge.

  13. It’s all about that “teddy-bear brush.” I don’t know if they still call it that, but they did when it first came out. My sister is currently trying a MAC mascara (can’t recall the name of it, but it has a similar brush, and when I tried her on, to me, it’s exactly the same as the Lash Out, but the brush is shorter and fatter, with varied-length bristles, depending how you turn the applicator. Meh.

For soft, smudgy, eyeliner, I’m all about the self-sharpening pencils. But. Lemme tell you my recent discovery, which is the new L’Oreal (coincidence, because prior to this, the Lash Out was my only L’Oreal product) “Paris HIP” (High-Intensity-Pigment) eye colors. WOW. These would be for when you want to make a STATEMENT. Or, say, turn a few tricks before Christmas shopping. I bought HIP in a deep sable, and this stuff means business. Just don’t make a mistake, because it’s NOT coming off without a fight. I ditched the way-to-wide applicator brush almost immediately, for a small, stiff, fine-pointed one, and now I adore the stuff. It’s more malleable than liquid liner, but more THERE than powder or soft pencil. It does NOT blend. At all.

Now I can actually change my eye look from day to evening! Wow! ( I also still dream of being one of those women who can apply false eyelashes. )

Now, if someone could recommend a blush with NO pink or red or burgundy in it, that, at the same time, is also not just potting-soil brown, that would be great. Carole Jackson used to make one called “warm honey” that was perfect for me, but it is no more. :-(
