spring break, day one: my house smells like beer
After weeks of mornings where I had to wake the boys up and listen to them moan, “But I LOVE my BED!” and “I want to SLEEP IN!” today they got up at 5:45. AM! Because it’s spring break and they CAN sleep in.
Damn kids.
I’m cooking corned beef, because it’s St. Patrick’s day and that means that we MUST have Heart Attack On A Plate for dinner. I’ve never cooked corned beef before, but my mother convinced me that all I had to do was toss it in my crockpot and ignore it all day. Then my dad told me to put beer on it, so I did that, and now my house smells like warm Miller Genuine Draft. Which is kind of disgusting, to be honest.

The beer ALL went in the crock pot. I swear.
What? You thought I was going to use GOOD beer? To COOK??? Are you INSANE?!?

It’s 3.2 beer, if that makes it better. Or worse. Whatever.
We wound up draining most of the beer off the corned beef about an hour ago, because the house smelled eerily like feet, which was making all of us queasy. Now the house smells more like meaty feet, which is a little better.
I’ll be serving the meaty feet corned beef with roasted new potatoes and green beans. Wade said this morning, “Don’t you usually have cabbage with corned beef?” and I said, “We’re German, not Irish, and cabbage scares me, so we’re having potatoes. And Irish beer.” And he said, “Okay then.” Although actually I bought Scotch ale for him at the liquor store.
At least it’s not 3.2.

We’re having fish and chips. I invited my friend Cory to join us, and she asked why I was making fish on Saturday instead of Friday. And writing it down, it doesn’t seem funny, but at the time I almost peed it was so hilarious. (Cory is Jewish, if it helps.)
Also, I hate to tell you this, but it smelled bad because you didn’t use good beer. You should only cook with booze you’d drink*. I would have used Guinness, or my personal favorite, Murphys.
*Or maybe you love MGD and I am being rude. Sorry!

Fear not, Annika–I’m not a fan of the MGD. Particularly in it’s 3.2 form.
But I do believe you are right about stinkyness being relative to general icky beerness.
Sigh.

hahahaha meaty feet! haha! I’m sorry, I can’t even put together a sentence! Hi-larious!

Meaty feet???? Girlfriend, I am ridiculously Irish, and we just had pizza.

I feel like Chicken tonight!
If I had a Guinness in the house, I’d drink up. I LOVE Guinness. Wouldn’t want to waste one to cook with though, so I’d do the same cheapy beer thing.

I think you just solved my overeating problem.
Hungry? Think meaty feet.
*gagging*

I can just imagine the house smelling like the day after a frat party–with warm unfinished beer sitting around.
We made lamb stew–and did throw in a bottle of Guiness.

We had Irish Stew and Irish Soda Bread for dinner. I make corned beef all the time and I’ve never heard of putting beer into the pot. Usually you make it with water, cloves, peppercorns, carrots, potatos, and an onion, boil it for a few hours, add the cabbage and cook until the cabbage is soft, and you’ve got a New England Boiled Dinner. My daughter’s favorite, btw.

I realize I’m not down with the cool kids anymore, but what is 3.2?
March 18th, 2007 at 11:36 am, Mara Says:
But what is more German than cabbage?

Ew. I’m totally Irish and we celebrated at a Mexican restaurant with green margaritas.

Gidge, 3.2 beer is beer that is 3.2% alcohol by volume (as opposed to a regular beer, which is 4.3% alcohol). In Oklahoma, grocery stores can ONLY sell 3.2, and ONLY 3.2 can be sold cold. Real beer must be purchased warm from a liquor store.
You have to plan ahead to get loaded here. Or drink warm beer.

Hideaway Pizza, got me through the night, with a Shiner Boch

Potatoes are way Irish! The potato famine is how so many Irish came to N America, after all. (Or have I garbled my history, yet again?)

When I make my German beef stew using beer I always reach for the cheap beer. Doubtless a roast or stew would be even better cooked with Shiner or Mexican beer, but I’m not about to waste it.

We had tacos, so you’re my hero for trying on the Irish thing. I wouldn’t know where to begin! By the way, when cooking, the better the beer, the better the beast. No sense wasting a good cornbeef on a MGD, try Sam Adams or Amstel next time. Even if the meat tastes like feet at least the sauce will be delicious.

Aaahhhh I remember 3.2 beer…moved away from Edmond a few years ago. Made corned beef the first time Saturday and I had a mild fear of once I took it out of pot. Mine tasted like a meaty salt lick….yuck

We drank Keystone Light. I prefer it to MGD, but I’m not actually sure it’s better
