sentimental

Slide bracelet and watch. Read about the bracelet here.

The first year we were married, Wade asked what I wanted for Christmas. We were living on about five dollars a month, because we were graduate students, and it was enough of a scramble just to buy groceries, but he really wanted to get me a present. So I said, “I need a watch. I want a little Timex, gold, with numbers on the face.”

He got it at Target, for probably $30.00. That was 1994 and $30.00 was a lot of money for us. $30.00 bought a lot of spaghetti.

I still wear that watch, nearly every day. I’ve replaced the band I don’t know how many times, with black leather and brown leather and black and brown lizard. Last summer, I took it to the fancy jeweler and had it cleaned, and he looked at me like I was crazy because it’s a Timex, for god’s sake, not a Tag Heuer.

I love that watch; I love the memory of all those years when it was just the two of us, in grad school, staying up late drinking Rolling Rock and looking things up in the OED. Because we are nerds to this day, but now we are nerds with better booze.

And I am a nerd with a vintage Timex ladies watch.

  1. That is the nicest story I’ve heard in a very long time.

Tomorrow on my site (and most likely flickr) I will post a photo of the new outfit. Because you asked so nicely and it feels good to be asked :)

  2. I have a timex that I want to have cleaned (Haven’t found anyone I trust with it yet). It was my grandmothers…not expensive, but it, too, is worth more than money.

That bracelet is so gorgeous, and what a great way to tie your special moments together. Thanks for sharing.

  3. When my dad died he left behind a collection of watches. There were a couple of fancy ones, and a lovely Tiffany - but I knew which one was most special to him.
It is a Timex my mom got him on their first anniversary.

  4. Timex’s are GOOD timepieces.

  5. Nerds with better booze. I love that.

It’s not the things so much as where the things came from. I know.

  6. i don’t think i’ve seen a slide bracelet before (i KNOW), but it certainly is lovely. especially with the story behind it.
