Pocket Doodles for Kids is the perfect gift for your creative kid
Charlie loves to draw; he will sit down at the table with a marker and any old piece of paper and doodle away, with his tongue sticking out of his mouth because he’s concentrating so hard. The other day, he came home from camp with a big smudge of green paint on his shirt. “Were you painting today?” I asked.
“Yes,” he said, “before camp, in the playroom.” He had helped himself to paint and paper and was working on a wee masterpiece.
So when my copy of Pocket Doodles for Kids showed up in the mail, I handed it over right away. Charlie pulled it out of the envelope and sat on the stairs looking through every page, and then he disappeared with the book and a pencil and I didn’t see him again until dinner time.
Pocket Doodles for Kids is a supercool, supersmart book for creative kids. Each page has the beginnings of a drawing or cartoon or story to get your child started. Charlie wrote dialog for a dog and a fire hydrant, and drew people dancing from a bare beginning of squiggly lines, and wrote a story about aliens. He took the book to bed with him every night for a week and drew until he fell asleep. The pages are simple and sleek, but they also invite participation; each incomplete line drawing is kid-friendly and totally accessible to a child. I cannot tell you how much we love this book.
This is a great travel book for kids, for those days when you’re going to be on the road for hours and don’t really want them playing video games from here to Boise; it’s a creative, unplugged way to fill long days in the car or on a plane. But it’s also a great find for kids like Charlie, who are just looking for one more creative outlet, and who love having a book that they made themselves.
Pocket Doodles for Kids is available from the Nasher Musem Store for $9.99. It makes a great gift, for your kid or someone else’s. Or for yourself, if you’re someone who is still looking for your inner creative kid.
Charlie gives it two thumbs up. Or he would, but he’s too busy drawing.
Charlie’s copy of Pocket Doodles for Kids was provided by the book’s publicist. Charlie says, “Thanks!”

Susan-
I miss the straight up blog posts about you, your children, and your life in OK. Am I the only one to feel like Friday Playdate is turning into a product review/giveaway blog? I’m going to continue hanging on because I believe in you as a writer, Susan, but please give us a readers a few more original posts.
A loyal fan!

Um, ouch. This *is* about Charlie. Who reminds me of my 9-year old daughter. She would absolutely LOVE this! I can totally see her getting completely absorbed. I wish I had time to order it before we go on vacation.

What a great idea! My 4yo loves to draw too. It sounds like it’s a little old for me, but I may check it out anyway.
