“Mistrust all enterprises that require new clothes.”

In four to seven business days, this bag will arrive on my doorstep.

because I deserve it

By my calculations, that means that by next Friday (at the LATEST) I will be schlepping Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and wadded up Kleenex and my gigantic Filofax around in my brand new J. Crew Somerset tote.

And also my iBook, because I have a new job! That may require the schlepping of the iBook!

Which OF COURSE means I need a new bag. A new SILK bag. Duh.

Starting Monday, I’ll be the lead at AisleDash, Weblogs Inc’s new wedding blog. The printed silk is an appropriate choice for the lead of a wedding blog, don’t you think? Also the bag is the perfect size, because it is big enough for my phone and my laptop and the paper bag I will need to carry with me at all times in case I start to hyperventilate because OH MY GOD WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO?!?

Ahem. Anyway!

I’m leaving ParentDish, effective sometime tomorrow, right after I finish writing my LAST POST (about this New York Magazine article on sleep and cognitive function, which you ALL should read, if only because I’m not sure if it’s a really useful piece or one more attempt to make us all feel like crappy parents — thoughts?). I think I am all done writing about parenting, at least in any kind of organized way. I’m ready to be something more than just the mommy all the time, which OF COURSE requires a new bag.

A new SILK bag in a totally impractical print. But big enough for my laptop! And a bottle of water, which I will also need when I’m having a panic attack because OH MY GOD WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO?!?

Maybe I should go right for the flask. Although I should look for a flask that goes with the bag, shouldn’t I? Because it’s all about the bag right now. Isn’t that the whole POINT of the new job?

Monday is going to be a long day, isn’t it? Yes it is. If only because I will still be waiting for my BAG to show up.

  1. Stunning bag! So, do you work from home and various coffee houses or is there an office to which you carry the stunning bag?

  2. I will mostly be working from my dining room table. But occasionally I will need to go get coffee, which requires a bag. THIS BAG.

Seriously, this is a terrific job, for a lot of reasons, not least of which is that I can do it in my yoga pants during the regular school day.

  3. Congratulations! I would have MADE you buy the bag when I found out, so it is best you bought it ahead of time.

    xo

  4. WhooHOOO! Congratulations. It would be my DREAM to blog about weddings, etc. I’ll be adding it to my Google reader even though I’ve been married for 7 years…

  5. Congratulations on the bag! Oh, and also the job. You’re awesome!

  6. Hooray, Susan, this is excellent news! About the job, I mean, not the bag. Though that’s certainly excellent news too.

Let me know if you ever need to hear about crazy brides spending $10,000 on butler cards. Seriously. I have stories.

  7. Congratulations on your new bag and job!! Any new job also requires a new outfit as well, don’t you think? This new beat sounds like the perfect fit for you. I wish you all the best of luck!!!

  8. Love the bag! I sent my sister the link for Aisle Dash. She is getting married next September, and I’m sure your words of wisdom will help!

  9. ps… the bag is sold out!!

  10. Congrats! On the bag!! And the job! Shopping…it must be so much fun! I’ll remember some day.

  11. Hooray for you! (and for the brides and grooms who will doubtless benefit from your wisdom - lucky them!)

  12. I’ll have you know that I drank three glasses of wine for you the other night. THAT’S how proud I am of you right now.

  13. Congrats! And the bag is totally perfect for such a career!

  14. Congratulations! That is fabulous! You’ll be amazing, as always. Something like that is my dream job. (Well, not about weddings, about which I surely have no particular expertise to pass on, but in general, that’s my dream job.)

Oh! The bag! Is fabulous! I LOVE my one J. Crew tote and would love a whole closet full of different ones.

  15. I’m pretty sure I need a new bag for your big occasion.

  16. I agree with BusyMom. I think all of Susan’s readers should go out and purchase a new bag this weekend to celebrate her new job.

  17. I’m so happy for you, Susan! You will do a fabulous job.

  18. congrats on the new gig!

i can understand about wanting to write about more than parenting after awhile. i’m headed in the opposite direction, wanting to write more about parenting. maybe because some of it’s so new (some of it’s not, as i’m a stepparent).

wishing you the best in the new job, susan!

  19. Wow, congratulations!

I don’t care if you write about parenting anymore, but my GOD, woman, you can’t be planning to give up writing about the clothes, can you? Think of me, left alone in the deep end after years of being afraid of drowning …

Um, did I just call you my Fashion Lifeguard? I believe I did. :)

  20. Ohhh, this is exciting! I’m talking sbout the bag, of course. The job - ah well, you’ll be great at it anyway, what’s the use in me yelling HOORRRRAY for you over here in Poland?

  21. *about.
    >headbang

  22. NOw, I may not be able to get into all that other fashion stuff, but bags are RIGHT up my alley. It’s a beauty.

Aslo– what job? Huh? Tell me, tell me, tell me! I’m dying of curiosity!

  23. I am not sure what I love more you or your new bag. Hmmmmm.

Congrats on the new job. (I just typed bag there by mistake and had to backspace over it)

  24. Yup, Busy Mom is right. We all need a new bag to celebrate Susan’s new job because, honestly, I’m feeling a little jealous and a tad under appreciated. I mean where is my new job? Does gainful employment require some sort of active participation on my part? Oh damn it all, a new bag will make me feel better. Too bad Susan bought the last J. Crew tote of its kind. She’s got all the luck.

  25. I love the bag!

You know, school is an enterprize that requires new clothing each year (actually several times a year)…perhaps I should mistrust it…

  26. Great bag! Have you ever noticed that we seem to pendulum swing from small, portable bags to huge bags that will carry everything, then back to small, then back to large…?

  28. You guys are so nice! Thank you!

Jan, I will still be writing about clothes (in fact, I think I’m going to put “Fashion Lifeguard” on my business cards — thank you!). The only thing I’m NOT doing is writing for ParentDish, although I miss them already.

And now you ALL need to start reading AisleDash. Pretty please. Mama needs a new bag. Oh, no, wait, I don’t! YOU all need a new bag! Yes!

    Something like that.

  29. Congrats on the job!

I might just copy you on that bag. :)

  30. Is that your quote ? Love it. Great bag. I have bought a lot from J. Crew this season.

  31. The quotation is from E. M. Forster’s A Room With a View, but I think it’s either Emerson or Thoreau.

I wish I could remember, but sadly I cannot.

  32. […] bag came today! And, in the SAME UPS delivery (which arrived during a HAIL STORM I kid you not) I also […]
