marshmellowy goodness

I took Charlie to storytime at Pottery Barn this morning (yes, Pottery Barn has a storytime and no, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but we were going to the mall anyway because I had to exchange something at The Gap and Leslie was taking HER kids to storytime and Charlie heard us talking about it at carpool drop off and started yelling, “I want to go with Ryry and Jakers!” and so there we were). Charlie decided to skip the “story” part of storytime, which was fine with me as the last time we sat through the reading portion the employee had clearly never even LOOKED at the books before much less READ them OUT LOUD to SQUIRMY CHILDREN; instead, he spent the time playing in the pink kitchen, pretending to serve me overpriced wooden food while I sat in the world’s most comfortable rocking chair (comfortable enough to make me RECONSIDER our irrevocable decision not to have any more children–yes, really, it is THAT comfortable).

When storytime was over, Leslie brought Ryan and Jake back to play, and the three boys spent nearly an hour playing with the doll house (Charlie and Ryan) and the pink stroller and microwave (Jake) while Leslie and I sat on a nice pink-and-white twin bed and caught up (read: talked about people we know–but in a NICE way, I promise).

And then my cell phone rang, which is rarely good, especially when I’m already WITH Leslie, who is the most frequent caller of my cell. It was Henry’s teacher. She was quick to say that everything was fine! but Henry wanted to tell me something! exciting! And then she put him on the phone.

And my sweet baby said, “Mommy, my TOOTH FELL OUT! Mason brought Rice Krispy treats for snack and I was eating mine and my TOOTH FELL OUT! And I was bleeding a little bit but I’m not any more. And my TOOTH FELL OUT!” He was so happy and excited; he told me that his teacher had washed the tooth off and put it in a bag, and it didn’t hurt at all. “And the Tooth Fairy will come tonight while I’m sleeping!” he said. “I really hope I can sleep.”

(I do, too, as he’s been up nearly EVERY SINGLE NIGHT recently, thanks to his new meds. And I have been up with him! Which guarantees that the Tooth Fairy will indeed come tonight, one way or another.)

Henry’s teacher got back on the phone and said that he was fine when it happened; he was eating his Rice Krispy treat and she saw the little red spot and thought it was an M&M. Then she noticed that Henry was bleeding and though he had a bloody nose. She tossed the Rice Krispy treat into the trash, put on the rubber gloves to clean him up . . .

And realized that his tooth was gone.

You all know how much I love Henry’s teacher. But on Tuesdays, he has a different teacher, who I like very much, but who has, I think, had a hard time figuring out what to do with Henry (and god knows I am sympathetic to that). But today, this teacher took his Rice Krispy treat out of the trash and dug through it until she found his tooth; then she washed the tooth, put it in a bag, and took him to the office to call me and tell me the good news.

I want to hug this woman and thank her for being so very kind to my son.

Henry has told everyone he’s seen today about his tooth; at the park this afternoon, he was playing with two boys who just happened to be there and was telling their mommy (a COMPLETE stranger, but VERY nice) about the tooth, including the part where it got STUCK in the Rice Krispy treat. He called Wade at work, he called my parents, he left a message for Wade’s parents . . . I think if he could have called the local news, he would have.

Fortunately, I have this web site and can tell the rest of you. My baby lost his first tooth! And the Tooth Fairy will be bringing him $5.00, just in case you’re wondering. Because, like his mommy, she feels like he should be rewarded, for being brave and happy and for being so grown up.

Although his mommy is missing her baby, just a little.

  1. My kids are 3.5 years old (twins, obviously) and I can remember when they were getting their teeth, how painful it was for them, how strange it was for us to watch these things grow out of their gums. The thought of them losing those teeth, having them fall out, is crazy. And it will mean they won’t even be toddlers anymore, they’ll be children. I was okay when they passed through babyhood, but toddlerhood has been amazing and I don’t want it to end. The time goes by so fast.

  2. Aw. Congrats to Henry. And I’m so glad that teacher was so awesome. She does deserve a hug and a thank you. I hope Henry’s sleep improves, though - are the meds helping other than that side effect, though?

  3. Awwwww your baby!! I can’t wait to hear how excited he is over the tooth fairy’s visit and what she leaves.

My baby still hasn’t lost a single tooth, and I can’t say that I mind (although he’s starting to feel anxious about it). Their faces change so much once those big people teeth start coming in.

    Hugs to YOU, Mama. :)

  4. Congrats to Henry!

Daria was the first kid in her class to loose her first tooth. Now she has lost 4, and she is such a pro when they become loose.

  5. I’m sort of wanting to cry now, even though this post wasn’t sad. Congratulations, Henry! I’m so glad he had a good day. :)

  6. Oh, Susan, he’s getting so big!

I can picture you, sitting with the phone pressed to your ear, grinning ear to ear….and still feeling a little bit sad inside…

    So big!

  7. Long ago when I thought we would be able to send Child to a Waldorf school (yea, that happened), I remember reading that they didn’t teach children to read. That reading came on it’s own after “the milk teeth” are lost. I suppose Aspies and other hyper-lexics just blow that to shit, huh? Those milk teeth are for money making. Way to go, Henry!

  8. Another milestone! Does he know you’ve broadcast his accomplishment to the internet? Will you pass on all our “CONGRATULATIONS, HENRY!!”’s? (HOW does one punctuate something like that???)

Guess what? Arthur saw Henry’s picture and said, “I like that picture. I like that boy. I think that is a nice boy. Will he be my friend?”

    Awwww….

  9. Oh my god, Mary P, I LOVE that! I really and truly love that. Thank you.

  10. Wow! Big things happening these days! My only advice re: the tooth fairy is to not let the ritual you create tonight become very elaborate. I made the mistake of handstamping a note on velum paper in silver ink for the first tooth, and it’s a pain in the patootie to recreate each time one of those suckers falls out! Which reminds me that Pepper’s top teeth are getting loose, and I keep forgetting to get Sacajawea dollars from the bank!

P.S. Does that rocking chair swivel 360? I was eyeing it in the PB catalogue last week. :)

  11. My heart broke a little bit when Christopher lost his first tooth (he was the last one of his first grade class to lose it; he, too, netted five bucks).

I think I might have to have mouth-to-mouth when Sophie loses her first tooth.

  12. There is nothing cuter than the pictures of kids with big holes in their smiles! Can’t wait to see Henry’s.

  13. $5 bucks!?

I’m getting some plyers out right now. I don’t need all of these teeth anyway.
