it’s posts like this that got me on the BoB short list

Charlie is still sick. He woke up this morning, after a good night’s sleep, and said he felt ‘Great!’ He ate toast for breakfast, and reminded me that we needed to go get some bananas. ‘And APPLES!’ he insisted. ‘RED ones!’

So we took Henry to school and went to SuperTarget and had coffee and a bagel at the Starbucks; he ate the ENTIRE blueberry bagel, which was probably his first substantial food in three days. He made charming conversation and listed all the people in our family who love him. He was very cute and very happy. We ran into my friend Melissa and, because I was feeling daring, I made a lunch date for Thursday. Because by Thursday, I assured her, everyone would be healthy! and in school! and I would be ready for adult conversation!

We picked Henry up and had our lunch (Charlie ate a little bit of a peanut butter sandwich) and got settled for our rest time. Charlie was asking to nap, but Henry wanted to play, and wanted Charlie to play with him. ‘No, buddy, he needs to rest,’ I told him.

‘Okay!’ he said. ‘You can play with me!’

And then I realized how godawful tired I was, which seemed funny, as I had gone to bed early last night. I talked Henry into resting in his room and laid down on the sofa. And fell soundly asleep.

Wade woke me up when he came in, at 1:30, on his way to the dentist. And I thought, hmm, my throat feels a little scratchy. So I made some tea.

Henry got up at 2:00; he played a computer game while I loaded the dishwasher. Charlie woke up crying at 2:15, and the diarrhea started again. He spent the afternoon lying in my lap on the sofa, moaning, while Henry flitted around the house in his superhero cape.

Wade came home from the dentist a little before 5:00, as Charlie was wailing, ‘My tummy hurts!’ and I was trying to figure out if my sore throat was actually getting worse, or if it was just all the whining.

It’s 6:45 now; Wade has taken Henry to his parents’ house for dinner and Charlie is watching Elmo’s Christmas for the second time. And me? Well, it’s funny you should ask.

I feel like I’m going to die. And do you know what I think is wrong with me? Any guesses?

Strep throat. Again.

But how is that possible? you ask. And all I can say is, I have no earthly idea. But! There it is!

I’m going to bed. I’ll be back when I’m not dying. And the kids aren’t dying. So don’t hold your breath.

  1. Oh no!! Don’t take this the wrong way, but it sounds like you need to fumigate the house. (actually, we do too — I’m recovering from a horrible case of pinkeye, and my husband J has strep also. Only the kids have been unscathed, knock on wood.)

    Hope you feel better ASAP!

  2. Sorry my friend for the strep thought. This winter has been so weird. I hope you feel better soon, as I too am struggling with a head cold. Blah!

  3. That happened to me when my boys were about the age of yours. We all got strep throat–I had it 3 times that year. I haven’t had it since.

  4. Oh, noooo. Not again. Warmest of wishes and lots of good health vibes coming your way. Too bad that superhero son of yours doesn’t have magical bug-zapping powers. (But don’t anyone suggest the possibility to him or poor sick Susan will be feebly fighting off the germ-fighter…)

  5. Oh I hope you feel better. I think strep is about as bad as it gets for colds. Lots of tea! Liam has had a temp off and on all day. No idea why - he seems ok - a little extra clingy but other wise fine. Just sweaty! Oh what’s that I hear in the monitor - coughing? Greeeeat.

  6. That SUCKS! I hope you all feel better soon.

  7. Really sorry you feel bad. And I really hope this doesn’t happen to you, but I had strep throat straight for three months. It would get better, then worse, then better again. Finally my doctor sent me to a throat specialist. Turns out I needed my tonsils out. I guess you get constant infections when your tonsils are inflamed. Really hope you get better soon.

  8. Oh, I hope you feel better soon. There is nothing worse than when mom is sick. I am happy to hear there was rest time today.

  9. Yes, I’m SURE you’re right. You made the short list because of the judges’ sympathy.

I made it so they could have someone to make fun of.

    Seriously though, feel better.

  10. Phooey, get better soon! At the risk of getting stoned by other commenters, it did cross my mind that you’ve had strep throat twice in the past few months and I, er, don’t think I’ve ever had it.

  11. Noodle has a cough that makes it sound like she has been smoking a pack a day for 20 years (of course she is only 4 so she hasn’t been smoking that long) and she has pink eye…I think this means that we all should go to a nice warm sunny place for awhile…BVI, anyone???

  12. Yuck, yuck, yuck. This sounds like my last semester of college. I had tonsillitis 4 times and strep once. I hope you aren’t allergic to penicillin! I don’t know about fumigating the house, but you should probably think about throwing away your toothbrush and getting a new one. Honestly though, I think my boyfriend is a carrier or something…now that he’s overseas I almost never get sick. I’m not sure that was a good trade…

  13. I have a friend whose daughter just had her tonsils out due to constant strep throat. I wonder if that’s where you’re headed…?? I can’t believe you’re sick again, and poor Charlie, too. May Henry and Wade stay healthy - keep them out of the house as much as possible!!

  14. Hope you feel better! Lots of tea with lemon. Or whiskey with coke. Either way, you should be feeling better!

  15. Make them give you steriods this time! You *know* how I love steriods and how they kick the hell out of ANYthing.

    Feel better soon.

  16. I am coming to this party waaaay late, but does this perhaps explain Charlie’s tantrum before daycare?
