it’s National Houswives Day! have a martini!

What, you didn’t know that today was National Housewives Day? Actually, I didn’t either until very late this afternoon, when it was too late, in fact, to do anything housewife-y. Like clean, which is unfortunate because our house is a pit.

I did, however, go to the grocery, although because of a Spreadsheet-Related Crisis at work (involving both payroll AND swine flu) I had to take the kids with me to the grocery, which no self-respecting housewife ever wants to do. But since we did not have one single morsel of food in the house, we had to go. You can’t order pizza two nights in a row, can you?

No, I think not. Unless you’re still in college. And living in a dorm or frat house. Although the boys’ bathroom is beginning to look and smell a lot like a frat house …

Since I finally made it to the grocery, I’m cooking tonight, which is totally housewife-y, at least for me. Of course, I’m not making anything hard. I feel like I should be pulling together a roast, you know, with some carrots and potatoes and rolls, and maybe a chocolate cake for dessert — instead, I’m making boiled red potatoes with peas and shrimp, and there’s a big bowl of leftover Halloween candy for after the meal.

I’m sort of bummed that I missed National Housewives Day, since it seems ripe for analysis and mockery. Although in the end, I’m just disappointed that I missed the chance to put on my shirtdress and some heels and pretend I was Betty Draper all day.

  1. I am an avid reader of your blog. I enjoy your writing and LOVE JCREW TOO! I also have two boys….Charley and Henry! Anyways, I wanted to tell you that I just polished off a bottle of wine and have enjoyed my National Housewives day…and it would have been all the better to hear your mockery of this day :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  2. You can’t order pizza two nights in a row, it’s true, but nobody says you can’t have Chinese takeaway on the second night and if you order pizza the night after Chinese…

  3. I think I shall twist this into something more to my liking …. National Housewives Day shall henceforth be known as the day all housewives, nationally, do nothing!

  4. Ok, since I’m not really employed, I’m going to run with this. Of course, it’s easier when you’re husband is away.

Do you think it’s bad to have a glass of wine on your own? I didn’t think so :)

  5. What?! I miss National Housewives Day all together!

    Do-over! I demand a do-over.

And I’m in college and a “housewife” most of the time (not really, because of the whole college thing) so the pizza two nights in a row is completely justifiable.

  6. Super cute blouse!!

  7. I missed it, too! In fact, I feel a little like Charlie Brown on Halloween here: on National Housewives Day, I got a rock. Can we have a do-over?

  8. I missed National Housewives Day, but I did make dinner last night. We’re having Boston Market tonight and not sure about tomorrow night yet. I think you can do pizza two nights in a row…just probably not on a regular basis.

And, to Bea above, a glass of wine by yourself is just fine! I often have one while I cook dinner, before my family comes home, after a full day of work!
