in which I turn to the Internet for product assistance

Help me, Internet. Revlon has discontinued my absolute favorite mascara. Bastards. I’ve suspected as much for a while, what with Target no longer carrying it, but the other day I bought the LAST tube at my local Walgreens and I started to think, huh, I wonder what’s going on with the mascara? and so I Googled it and sweet cracker sandwiches! DISCONTINUED!

And while I could start buying it on eBay, I would rather not, because that’s sort of a pain in the ass, and it just postpones the inevitable. One day, the last tube of Revlon Colorstay will be empty and it will be time to move on. Except I won’t know which way to move because it took me years–YEARS!–to find this particular mascara. In the meantime, I’m stockpiling and searching for a replacement. Which is where you come in. Find me a mascara. Pronto.

My needs are simple: I’m not looking for extra length or extra thickness or extra curl. In fact, I’m looking for a formula that does NOT try to plump my lashes in any way, shape, or form. ALL I want is color. BUT it needs to be long-lasting and must be able to withstand sweating and crying and the putting in and taking out of contact lenses.

My beloved Revlon Colorstay is a lash TINT, not a traditional mascara; it’s a lightweight gel formula. I need a makeup remover to take it off, and frankly, I’m good with that; “water-resistant” formulas don’t work for me, nor does anything that advertises that it can be removed with soap and water. LONG WEARING, people. Must be long-wearing. And lightweight.

And available in an actual store near me and not solely by mail.

So let’s recap, shall we? I want a long-lasting, gel formula mascara that will NOT come off without makeup remover. I would really love to spend under $10.00 a tube, but I realize that this may not be possible. And if you could suggest a mascara that would also make my boobs look bigger, that would be terrific.

Ready, set . . . recommend.

  1. Philosophy’s “The Supernatural” lash darkener is what I always use, and it acts just like what you describe. It’s very thin and darkens without the gooey coating (gross). It doesn’t curl lashes or mess with them in any way other than to tint.

I don’t know if it’s a gel or not - it acts more like an ink, if that makes sense. It’s very long-lasting and never gives me the raccoon. I have to use remover to take it off.

My tube is really old (my eyes are going to rot and die, I know) and sometimes the brush looks completely dry to me, but if I run a little water over it, it’s good as new. This has lasted me something like 5 years, though I only use it a few times a month.

The sad news is that it appears to cost $22, at least through their website. Boo! Maybe cheaper at a real store?

Good luck. I look forward to reading other people’s ideas, because sooner or later I am going to use up the last molecule of this stuff and then I will be screwed but good.

  2. I forget the name, but I beleive it’s Maybelline and it’s in the Pink and Green tube.
It’s been voted best non-kill-your-wallet mascara again and again in magazines. (Not their wording though) and when I wore mascara I was always pleassed with it

  3. Neutrogena has an eyelash tint, that’s only 8 bucks, called Neutrogena “Clean Lash Tint.” Also Maybelline has a mascara that won’t turn your lashes in to spider legs, called “Full ‘N Soft” (What’s wrong Maybelline? Typing out the word “and” was just too much trouble?)and it comes in waterproof if you really need something durable.

  4. Check Almay and Altima. They are both Revlon brands and may have something similar.

  5. I meant Ultima, not Altima.

Also, check drugstore.com, I stocked up on my favorite lipstick there when it went bye bye a while back.

  6. I really like UNSTOPPABLE (I think Maybelline makes it?) but I have to say that it’s brush sucks a lot….I end up using a different brush on it.
I just want to put it on once a day and it never come off until I will it to be so.

  7. Oooh, finding a good mascara’s hard.
Want me to check around here for your old brand?

  8. The pink and green stuff that JRM suggested is Great Lash, which I buy a new tube of every month (I’m germophpobic and at $5 a tube it allows me to restock frequently). It doesn’t crud my lashes, although it can get a bit smudgy by day’s end.

Here’s what I do in the summer: I have my lashes tinted at a salon. Most places use a vegetable based dye that stays on for about a month. So, it’s your lashes, only darker. Swim, sleep, cry, change lenses without smudging- it wears off gradually. It’s usually not more expensive than buying a high-end tube of mascara per month. I have short lashes so I prefer mascara most of the year.

  10. oiceSWEET MERCIFUL CRAP!

We use the same eyelash tint!

That explains why it’s been turning up in my local discount stores for $1.99-$3.99 per tube… better grab some more while I can.

But if anyone out there knows of a similar formula to the one Susan is looking for, smudgeproof gel with staying power for under $10 per tube, but with the added benefit of making my ass look smaller, by all means, let me know.

  11. Are your lashes really, really pale? If you find something great, let me know. I’d love to stop using mascara and go for a tint, but the tints I’ve used in the past haven’t really *done* anything. I’d like to appear to have lashes, if you know what I mean.

  12. Would you like us all to run out and buy up Revlon Colorstay and send it to you?

    I could totally do that.

  13. I’d totally get you some here too. I use the Maybelline Great Lash but it can get a bit clumpy. Benefit made one I really liked but then I had a child and stopped shopping in Sephora as he likes to sample the wares.

  14. As one who does not wear make-up except at lunch dates with bloggers, I’m going to pass this one right along to the other knowledgable readers.

  15. I think Kara deserves a prize for finding an actual SALON that will tint my lashes. Good work, Kara.

My lashes are long–so long that they touch the lenses in my glasses–and very VERY blonde. If that helps anyone.

  16. How about this stuff?
