having my own Charlie Brown Christmas

So with two weeks and counting, we still don’t have our Christmas tree up or any of our decorations out (exception: we got our Advent box out on December 1 and filled the little drawers with Hershey kisses because who doesn’t want chocolate?) and frankly, I don’t really care.

Well, I mostly don’t care, until I drive through the neighborhood in the dark and see everyone else’s lights. Then I get all wistful about our total inability to decorate.

(Other exception: We have Snow Village up — you know, those little ceramic houses with the lights in them — but only because Wade’s mother cleaned out her store room and gave me a bunch of pieces; when we brought them home, we unpacked them in the dining room and set them up. And then stopped decorating.)

I’m trying to get in the spirit — the boys are so excited they can hardly stand themselves — but I need to get through the week first. Maybe this weekend I’ll have time to drag the Christmas tree down from the attic and plug it in.* We’ll see.

You know, in between the basketball games (2) and birthday parties (also 2) and Christmas plays (only one, thank god).

*See how lazy I am? I have a PRE-LIT TREE and I still can’t manage to get my act together! That is really so sad.

In the meantime, enjoy some wee children singing off key. Ah, Christmas. That’s what it’s all about, right?

  1. If it weren’t for my husband, this house would be totally undecorated. Which seems fair, since if it weren’t for me, no bathroom would be cleaned. And he is the one who is retired.

  2. Susan, You and your family have been sick. It’s okay to be a bit low/late on the Christmas spirit. After all, you still have 2 weeks, yes? Gifts and decorations aren’t the most important part of the holidays. Okay, gifts are if you are a kid. But, besides that detail, don’t worry. Things will work out! Take care of yourself!

  3. Same here…Some days it is difficult to get out of my own way!

  4. I’m so glad the your life has been so simplified by becoming a freelancer ;-)

    I do so understand.

  5. Go for it! It’s a pain, but once it’s done everything seems so much better in the glow of the Christmas lights.

It’s the taking it down that’s the killer.

  6. Thank you for saying this. From one haven’t-had-the- energy decorator to another. I hope we can get the lights and everything up tonight. After that I promise “to keep Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year.”

  7. You know, it’s easier to just leave it up year ’round. :D

  8. We have a tree up - and that’s not saying much.

I just talked my husband into throwing the pumpkins on the porch away yesterday.

    Bah Humbug.
