happy birthday, Henry!

Today is Henry’s sixth birthday. I was going to tell you the uproariously funny story of Henry’s premature arrival (highlight: the doctor announces, “I can feel the baby’s head!” and Wade says “ARE YOU KIDDING? YOU CANNOT FEEL THE HEAD! CAN YOU???” and the doctor says, “Wade, what exactly did you THINK I was reaching for in here?” and Wade says, “I have NO IDEA.” The whole delivery was like that. Fun for all! Especially for me, once I got my epidural. But I digress).

We spent the day at Turner Falls, which is really akin to spending a week in hell, but the boys loved it. Here’s proof!

The castle! Oh my god we love the castle! It’s a trip to the ER waiting to happen!

What would you say if I told you the boy was noodling?

“Mama, do you have some dry clothes for us?”

Bob: You want to go camping with your daddy and me?

Henry: No thanks, Bob. But can we come back to see the castle again?

All that noodling takes a lot out of a buddy.

Henry says that he had a happy birthday, and I believe him. He also swears that he doesn’t feel any older, although I certainly do (the noodling* just about did me in). Yesterday, however, he repeatedly said, “I feel OLDER today. So can I open some presents?” But the funniest thing was this: every time anyone wished him a happy birthday, all day long, he would start to say, “And happy birthday to you, too!” and then would catch himself and say, “And happy birthday . . . to ME! Yes, to me! Thank you!”

*No, the boys weren’t really noodling, although you should click every single one of those links. Because OH MY GOD! And OH MY GOD!

  1. Happy Birthday, Henry! What a nice day you had!

I didn’t click on the links at first, thinking Henry was swimming with a pool noodle, but OH MY GOD!
Fishing is NOT supposed to be wrangling.

  2. Seriously, CLICK THE NOODLING LINKS. Because OH MY GOD!

You have to see it to believe it. And even then, you might not.

  3. Happy birthday to Henry!!

Turner Falls is a lot of fun… once or twice. :-) I love that castle, and the robber’s cave is AWESOME!

(Oh, and BTW, I can’t believe your doctor called Wade by his name instead of just “Dad.” There were–and still are–many times when I felt like wringing the neck of some medical person and screaming “I HAVE A NAME, AND IT ISN’T MOM! UNLESS YOU’RE MY CHILD! WHICH YOU AREN’T!”)

  4. Happy Birthday, Henry!

  5. Happy birthday, Henry! And noodling! Where do you FIND this stuff?!

  6. Happy Birthday, Henry!

The noodling links are just wacky! Yes, I agree, OMG!

  7. Happy Birthday Henry!

  8. Happy Birthday, Henry! And please don’t tell Bryce about that castle…he’ll force me to go and then we’ll end up in the ER. Sheesh.

  9. Happy Birthday to Henry!

    I have a niece, a cousin & a neighbor with June 3 birthdays. A good day to be born, I’d say! :)

  10. Happy birthday, dear Henry!

I did not click the noodling links because every well-bred Oklahoma girl knows what that is. And no, I will never, ever attempt it in my life! Ack!

Hope you at least got a blueberry scone out of it, dear.

  11. Happy Birthday to Henry; and No, you shouldn’t click on the last Noodling link, because if Mozilla is your internet, you can’t get back to Playdate without going the circuitous route (back to your own blog, clicking the Playdate link, etc).
I want to go to the Castle!!

  12. Happy Birthday to Henry! I love the pics of the boys. You have two handsome little partiers there.

  13. Happy Birthday Henry! Hey, when are you guys coming to Minnesota this summer?

  14. Those fish are HUGE, and happy birthday to Henry. It looks like a very fun day.

  15. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HENRY!! (Here’s your present.)

When I was one, I had just begun.
When I was two, I was nearly new.
When I was three, I was hardly me.
When I was four, I was not much more.
When I was five, I was barely alive.
But now I am six, I’m as clever as clever.
I think I’ll be six now forever and ever.

But that noodling stuff! I’m claustrophobic: the thought of going down under murky water (eek!) and feeling around in invisible holes (help!) and risking getting FINGERS BITTEN RIGHT OFF (ouch!) in order to lay hands on a slimy, UGLY fish (yuk!) is absolutely the stuff of nightmares for me.

Whatever turns yer crank, I guess, but they’re welcome to it. Yeesh.

  16. I hate to be unoriginal, but OH MY GOD! Darwin Awards, here we come!

And a very happy birthday to Henry!

  17. Noodling. I’ve just learned something new.

    Happy Belated to Henry!

  18. Hello there, found you from Granny’s blog. I hope you don’t mind. Happy Belated to Henry and I love your profile intro. I’ve been reading and thank you for the laughs this great Saturday. I too have learned something new today….I never knew that “noodling” is what that’s called.
