funny AND family oriented!
We spent our weekend shuttling to soccer games (I know it’s Tuesday but honestly, it’s taken me THIS LONG to catch up from the weekend). Henry had a game on Saturday, which he did not get to play in because despite my reminding him THREE HUNDRED TIMES to put his shin guards on, he left the house without them and the ref refused to let him in the game because the league rules say everyone has to have a jersey and shin guards.
Henry spend his game sitting on the grass next to the field alternately begging to play and begging to go home, or at least sit somewhere more comfortable (no, you will sit here because that’s what you do when you’re part of a team, and also when you have me as your mother) while one other child on his team spent the game begging NOT to play. It was awesome, particularly for the coach, who repeatedly turned around, saw Henry in his jersey just sitting there, reached out to grab him, and THEN remembered that he couldn’t play.
It was that kind of weekend.
Charlie spent the entire game playing soccer off on the side with two of his friends, both of whom ARE on a team, because they are in kindergarten this year. Charlie, of course, is NOT on a team because I misunderstood the sign up sheet and assumed that when it said the teams were for K-8 that meant that my PRE-K kid couldn’t play, but oh no! he COULD have played! except now it’s too late!
Guess who is DYING to play soccer? And who is EXTRA mad at me because he’s not in kindergarten this year?
It was that kind of weekend.
On Sunday morning, Henry was fully suited out–jersey, shorts, shin guard socks, cleats–at eight am. For a three pm game. Wade took the boys to Starbucks and the bookstore, and Henry went in full soccer garb. Charlie, on the other hand, cobbled together a pretend uniform, consisting of Henry’s old YMCA jersey and HIS cleats (I didn’t sign him up for soccer, but I did buy him cleats and a ball–go figure). My kids are nothing if not stylish.
Henry did get to play on Sunday, thank goodness, although he was a little TOO into it. At one point, when he was NOT in the game but was standing on the sideline with his coach, the ball came rolling past him . . . and he stuck out his foot to stop it and tripped a kid from the other team.
Wade turned around and said, “Reminds you of Woody Hayes, doesn’t it?”
It was THAT kind of weekend.
But there was a bright spot: some kind soul has, for the THIRD year in a row, nominated Friday Playdate for an Okie Blogger award–for TWO, actually (Best Family Blog and Best Humor Blog). If you are an active Oklahoma blogger (at least one post on your blog between June 19 and August 17 of this year) you can vote for me! But only once, please. We’re all about the rules here, you know. In fact, you might want to put on some shin guards before you vote, just in case.
Voting closes September 26, so get on it! And thank you!

This is my first time to read your blog, but I like it. I don’t have any children, but I did play soccer and I totally understand the plight of not getting to play. It’s worse when you get hurt and can’t play for weeks.
I will admit that a couple of times when I didn’t get to play, I acted like a horse’s rear end about it. I’m not proud of it by any means. So, tell your son that someday he’ll look back on how he acts and may regret it.

It was too many of those weekends - just add rain - that convinced my kids to skip it this fall.
{I deny the accusations. I didn’t sway them towards indoor sports and choir, no sir.}
I’m off to vote. I’m convinced.

I lied, and can’t read. I don’t have the Okie credentials.

You can usually get shin guards off siblings watching the game.
Also, keep a second set in the car. Not that I’ve had experience in this or anything…

[…] how Charlie really REALLY wanted to play soccer? And how I felt bad because I didn’t realize that K-8 ALSO meant “pre-K kids if you ask […]

Mine played for 3.4 minutes during the first game, then decided he’d had enough. That was a year ago, and he STILL refuses to play, so no soccer for us.
