does it count as shopping if all I bought was a refrigerator?

Yesterday morning, I broke a wine glass. And no I wasn’t drinking at six am, I was making the boys’ lunches and the glass was in the sink waiting to be washed and I knocked it over and shattered it. Into the garbage disposal.

You know what’s fun? Picking shards of glass out of the garbage disposal! Before coffee! Awesome.

We’re down to three glasses for white wine and four for red wine, of the original I don’t know how many we got as wedding gifts. But I thought, meh, we can be European and drink wine out of juice glasses.

Because it’s the Month of Not Shopping!

But then in the afternoon, when I was unloading the groceries I thought, huh, the fridge seems a little not so cold, I wonder if Wade has been messing with the settings and then I saw something shiny on the floor and completely forgot about it. And after school when Henry complained that his milk wasn’t very cold I rolled my eyes and distracted him with something shiny and completely forgot about it. But then Wade came home and went to get I don’t know what from the fridge and said, “Have you noticed that the fridge isn’t cold?”

And he was right.

The FREEZER is working just fine, but the refrigerator part is NOT. At all. Oh it’s not WARM inside or anything but it certainly isn’t cold. Which certainly isn’t good.

I ran out last night and bought a cooler and two bags of ice, and we put the milk and juice and half and half in there, so that we could get through the morning. Because you know, milk for the kids’ cereal, juice for Henry’s medication, and half and half for Mommy’s coffee. What more do we need?

Then we stood in front of our very very pretty stainless steel fridge, the one we bought with the house, the one that is only FOUR YEARS OLD and mulled our options. Which, in the end, came down to going back to the boutique appliance store the fridge originally came from to see about a repair recommendation, and buying another fridge for the garage, because we need one anyway.

New, very basic fridge coming tomorrow. Appliance store opens in a hour. I’m trying to brace myself to toss the stuff that won’t survive the day in the unworking fridge, which probably includes the leftover flank steak from last night and the hamburgers for this weekend.  And whatever it is that’s starting to smell funny.

But what I REALLY want to do is go shoe shopping.

  1. Did you see Tim Gunn’s new show last night? So shiny you won’t have to think about the fridge!

  2. Ugh. We too are down to only a handful of wine glasses. Somehow whenever I am around them, I turn into a graceless klutz.

Sorry about the fridge. That sucks — why do repairs always become necessary when you are being so good about not spending money? Maybe you should buy a pair of shoes to cheer yourself up…

  3. I’m fashion challenged. I know this, and have no money to do anything about it. I shop at thrift stores because that’s all I can do. Thrift stores, are by and large, someone else’s attempt to get with the fashion flow and not a place to get solid wardrobe staples.

One of my questions is-and it’s really for my mother-if you are short waisted, when is it ok to wear a shirt tucked in? We both are, she tucks everything in and looks like Urckle, I never tuck anything in which she thinks looks sloppy. I think it elongates my torso.

I was inspired to ask you this question watching Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style last night. Maybe his book would be more helpful then Nina Garcia’s?

She never really stood out to me on Project Runway as a fashionista. She seemed well put together, but mostly just bland.

  4. HOW DID I MISS THE TIM GUNN SHOW? You all have GOT to do a better job of giving me a heads up about these things.

    Kidding! Really.

(Beth, I promise to answer your question. Right after I figure out how to get my fridge fixed.)

  5. The exact same thing happened to my nearly-new stainless-steel fridge recently. And then, after I had it repaired, it happened AGAIN a month later. Much food lost. Make sure you get a warranty on the repair work.

  6. We’ve broken all but two stemmed wine glasses in the three years since we got married, and we keep those for a couple we know who are wine connoisseurs. We drink our wine out of mason jars. Small ones, though I have suggested that perhaps it would be more efficient to use the quart-sized ones.

  8. Welcome to my world.

  9. Argh. I feel for you, Susan, I really do. But boy do you look fabulous in that dress! Is that the one from the Gap? LOVE IT.

  10. There are different glasses for red and white wine? Really?
Usually if I feel the need to drink, I head straight for the vodka. I never did get the hang of wine. And now I know WHY I have so many stupid wine glasses that look almost the same but don’t exactly match! Who knew?!

  11. It’s Bravo, it will presumably repeat 12 times in the next 3 days. Cause Tim Gunn? So precious I want to wrap him up and keep him in my closet.

  12. Googling Tim Gunn’s show RIGHT NOW. Because really I’m just sitting around waiting for the freezer to defrost, so there’s not much else to do.

    Thank you!

  13. You’ve only broken your no-shopping vow if you actually WEAR the new refrigerator.

  14. I could do no shopping in November, I’m getting married next month. I should get bonus points if I keep the whole afair under $2000.
I have 4 wine glasses left. Late hubby didn’t like wine, soon to be hubby doesn’t drink. I must take full responsibility for the remaining 4 glasses :)
