March 3, 2010

three!

Yesterday was a good day. The kind of day where a door closed but an even better window opened. Three windows, in fact.

Three good things happened yesterday, and while I cannot tell you what they are, I can tell you this: March is off to a very good start. And it’s only going to get better.

My Day of Good Things included an unplanned lunch date with my husband, which was lovely not only because it was an hour of adult conversation with one of my favorite people, but also because it meant getting dressed and leaving the house to go somewhere other than the grocery or the carpool line. That in itself is a good thing.

March 2

This dress was $40 at Ann Taylor and is easily one of the best things in my closet, although despite the fact that I wear it quite literally all the time, I only yesterday realized that it has those little loops in the shoulder to hold my bra straps. Hooray! And the necklace — which I also wear all the time — is J. Crew via eBay, also for $40, which makes it a very good thing.

Big things are coming, you all, and I’m so excited I can hardly stand it.  But for now it’s your turn: tell me something good that’s happened to you this week. Anything at all! No good thing is too small.

Ready? Share.

what I wore in 2010: January

So I’m one month in to this whole year of photographing what I’m wearing, and so far my biggest revelation has been that I wear the same damn thing all the time. Also that I hate winter, at least the kind of winter where it’s cold and there is snow on the ground for more than 48 hours.

I am totally over winter. I am also starting to be a little bit over my skinny jeans and my boots, largely because I’ve worn them every single day for the past month, give or take about three days.

I’m not making that up; you can see for yourself.

February 1

My project for February is to wear pieces that I have not worn yet this year, which will require some cooperation from the weather (because apparently I only own three outfits that are appropriate for actual winter conditions) and some creativity on my part. And by “creativity” I really mean whatever the opposite of laziness is because it’s just so much easier to grab some skinny jeans and a sweater every morning than it is to plan an outfit, especially since I’m typically getting myself dressed while simultaneously helping Henry find clean pants and walking Charlie through the list of places he might have left his belt.

Of course, to kick off the Month of Creative Outfitting, I slogged my way out of bed this morning after three hours sleep and grabbed my skinny jeans and my only turtleneck and the universe’s most trustworthy cardigan sweater. So I guess I can cross that outfit off the list for this month. Only 27 more days to go! Hooray!

So in a nutshell, what I learned in January is that I do not own enough clothes to live in a place where winter does not mean lows in the 50s, and my carefully edited closet could benefit from a pair of boot cut jeans. The end.

January 28, 2010

hunkered down (but in a very ladylike way)

After three days of juggling a sad, sick kid and gigantic pile of work, I woke this morning to two! healthy! children!

And a severe winter storm. I cannot get a break over here.

(Actually, that’s only half true — Oklahoma City public schools were all closed today, but my kids are at school until after lunch. So I’ve got that going for me.)

January 28: part two
I will probably wear these pants all weekend.

We’ve known for days that this storm was coming, but yesterday it was sunny and 65 degrees, which makes it really really hard to actually believe that by tonight we will be totally iced in. And possibly without power! Hooray!

Also, dammit.

I went to the grocery on Tuesday night, and got all provisioned. And then Charlie and I went again yesterday because we were completely out of batteries and candles and half and half.

What?!? It’s an emergency! I need half and half!

Oddly, there wasn’t any half and half to be had, only non-dairy creamer (uh, no) and whipping cream. I went with the whipping cream, figuring I could mix it with milk and make my own half and half. So far, I’ve just been dumping it in my coffee straight. It’s delicious, but if this goes on for too long, I’m going to need a bypass.

(Also, please explain to me why half and half is a storm-related staple. Bread I understand, but half and half? Weird.)

This morning I woke up and realized that a frozen pizza and three loaves of bread were probably not the best food options for the next three days, so I went back to the grocery and got real food (still no half and half! and today no whipping cream, either — weird, I tell you). Of course, in the checkout line I realized that if our power goes out, I have no way to actually prepare any of this food; I would have been better off sticking with the bread and just making pb&j sandwiches.

Wade’s office is closing at noon; he’s going to bring the kids home. We have movies and snacks and hopefully enough alcohol to get through two days of Enforced Family Togetherness (oh who am I kidding, there’s not enough alcohol in the world for that). I’m all cozied up in the cashmere yoga pants I scored from Rita, which are the Best Thing Ever (though when I sit on our mohair sofa, the static charge from the pants could light up most of my neighborhood).

((That could come in handy if the power goes out, now that I think about it …))
