breakfast with Charlie
Charlie decided on Friday morning that what he really wanted for breakfast was hot chocolate. That was one too many things to ask me to do, so I said no, we’ll have it this weekend.
On Saturday, he came bouncing downstairs with his blanket hanging over his shoulder like a ragged toga and said, “I would like some HOT CHOCOLATE for breakfast.” Then he thought for a moment and added, “Please.”
The hot chocolate has to go in a real mug, like the ones Mommy drinks coffee from; if I try to put it in anything with a lid, he gets insulted. Understandable, really.
“Mommy, what’s in YOUR cup?”
“Coffee.”
“Can I see?”
“Sure.”
“Tomorrow, can I have coffee?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
He drank most of his cocoa and then remembered that it might be too hot (it wasn’t; it never is) and decided to blow on it. Because that is part of the ritual, of course.
I can see the sugar kicking in, can you?

I once let my oldest try a tiny sip of coffee because he was so interested in mommy’s favorite drink. He hated it. He was so grossed out that he hasn’t asked to try it since and he told his younger brother how yucky it is. Now I never get requests to share my coffee. Sometimes offense is the best defense.
Your son is a cutie. Isn’t it amazing how kid’s never forget about a promised treat?

I’m not a hot chocolate fan myself (not sure why–I’m an everything else chocolate fan), but Danger Boy sure is.
He still remembers third grade when he and two neighbor kids were in the same class. They would all do their homework at our house and I’d make them hot chocolate and popcorn. Good times.
Wise idea to hold off on the coffee!

My Belle is a Hot Cocoa girl. I’m willing to bet he’ll remember the day you let him have cocoa at breakfast for a long time!
Like that time our preschool teacher let us finger paint right on the table!! It was seriously the best. day. ever.

The ‘Please’ was a nice touch. Are those Fruit Loops too? What a lucky boy.

We had hot chocolate yesterday after a chilly walk around the neighborhood. My son asks me for marshmallows on the side. He, too, blows on it although it’s never too hot.

Oh - and I think those look like multigrain Cheerios.

mmm. Hot cocoa for breakfast. I think he’s on to something there. Tomorrow I think I will a coffee with a side of a hot cocoa for breakfast. Actually, come to think of it, have you ever mixed hot chocolate and coffee to make a cafe mocha? mmmm.

Sugar and caffeine. Woo-eee! But in another 30 minutes he’ll crash, so it’s all good.
I don’t know why, but there was something really endearing about all those Cheerios (Fruit loops?) stuck to the side of the bowl. Such a little-kid thing.

He is a cutie! Savor these moments, they grow up way too fast!
(Speaking of which, did you go to Kenyon? My “baby” is currently waiting to hear if he got in)

Every time you tell a Charlie story, I get excited for the day when I can have a conversation with Theo. I hope he talks in ALL CAPS like Charlie.

He IS so precious. My 3-year-old thinks cocoa is just about the biggest treat in the world. She gets in sometimes when she comes in from playing outside in the snow. If she knew kids drank it for breakfast, her little head would spin.

Can I just say…we have those pajamas! And our Charlie wears them! Only they’re getting a little small….which makes me sad. Your Charlie is adorable, too!
