black is the new pedicure
I had a hard time waking up this morning. I don’t know if it was the weather (rainy warm humid) or the coffee (too weak too little) or the gigantic list of Things To Do (write write write hot water heater windows toilet write write write) or something else entirely (alignment of planets or vertebrae or shoes) that threw me, but I slogged through the morning in a fog. A crabby fog, if that means anything to you, or perhaps a cranky fog.
It was a long morning.
By lunchtime, I’d had it. I stopped even pretending to get things done and went to the nail salon for a pedicure. Can you believe that? It’s probably been ten years since I just dropped everything and went off to have my nails done. I took my book (The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls) and I plunked my feet in the spa bath and read and reveled in having my feet rubbed. The Vietnamese woman kneaded my toes and my calves and slapped the bottoms of my feet and all the cranky and crabby went right out of me.
It was just what I needed.
Because I was a little bit out of it, from the coffee and the weather and the list of Things I Wasn’t Doing, I had a hard time choosing a polish color. In the end, I had the woman paint my toe nails black. With sparkly stuff over the black. And I love it.
The woman next to me was having a manicure and pedicure, both in black; her fingernails were so pretty and chic. The woman massaging my feet asked if I wanted a manicure too, but I’ve been biting my cuticles (I know, I KNOW!) and they are a mess, so I passed. But I loved that black manicure so much that I came home and slathered each raw and chewed cuticle with polysporin and wrapped it in a band aid and started willing the mauled skin to heal. Next week, when the skin around my nails is whole again (plus the spot where I gashed my finger making iced coffee–don’t ask) I’m going to go back and have the manicure. Sparkly black fingernails!
I feel extra chic tonight, with my sparkly black toe nails. Also, a little pitiful, since six (six!) of my fingers are swathed in plastic bandages. I’ve managed to chip one toe, crashing into a chair in the living room, but I figure that a Sharpie marker and some clear topcoat will take care of that. In fact, next time maybe I will skip the salon and just color my nails with the Sharpie.
No, I don’t think so.

Coming from almost anyone else I would have though, BLACK?? Ew. But if you say it looks chic, I bet it does. Forget the OPI bottle, lets see the piggies painted black!

Black! I wouldn’t have thunk it. But. Just maybe tomorrow when the sitter is here I could possibly do it.

My dad gave me The Glass Castle last month and I couldn’t put it down! It is an amazing story.

I have a very very dark maroon that is almost black on my toes right now. But I’ve done black on both hands and feet.
I know what you mean about the cuticles. I only bite the ones on my thumbs, but they look like crap. The thing is, as soon as they grow back they’ll drive me nuts because they are so thick from years of picking at them. They are disgustingly ugly.

I hardly ever paint my toenails, but my favorite color is a dark silver/gold/bronze color that looks kind of like sparkly black. Are you going to take a picture for us??

Hey. Sharpie nails are totally IN. Well, if you’re in grade four. (Or at least it was four years ago, when my youngest was in that grade.) And for the sparkles? Glitter glue!!
Yes, indeedy. Try getting THAT out of the girl’s socks…

I have noticed that all the “it” people are wearing black. Good to know it looks good on us “regulars”. And the sparkly stuff looks good too? I’m on it.

I’m with everyone else–I’d love to see a picture of the black toenails to see if I need to make a visit to the neighborhood nail salon!

I was hoping we’d get to see a picture of the finished product.
I think I have to SEE it to BELIEVE it. Black? Really?

Oh, I like you all so much, but there is no way I’m putting pictures of my feet up here. Trust me, you do NOT want to see that.
Next week, when I get the MATCHING manicure, you can see THAT. Promise.

OK, I really do have nastier feet than you–promise! So now you don’t have to feel self-conscious when (Note: not if) you post the photo of your toes. I would never ever think to get black for a pedi, but now I’m very much intrigued. But I will definitely have to see them first before I take the plunge myself! Please?

I posted pictures of my feet with all 9 incisions! Some of which are 5 inches long. Surely your feet are not worse than that!
