at some point during the weekend, I completely lost my mind

And no, it wasn’t because of the toilet episode (which was fairly tame, actually–a quick plunge and all was well. Although it was awfully early, and I am pretty sure I was having the Bradley Whitford dream again when Henry woke me up).

I don’t exactly know how it happened, but yesterday I signed myself up for the National Novel Writing Month project. Yes, between midnight on November 1 and midnight November 30, I am going to (try to) write a 50,000 word novel. See what I mean? I’ve lost my mind!

I decided to run this past Wade yesterday, before I actually commited to anything, to see if it sounded as insane when I said it out loud as it did in my head, and he said, ‘Good for you! Do it!’ which I took as a good sign. Then he said, ‘You know, writing a novel isn’t something I ever wanted to do,’ and I said, ‘Me either!’ and I signed up anyway. BECAUSE I HAVE LOST MY MIND.

But I have been wanting, for a while, to write about something other than my children, and I think this will force me to do it. So I’m going to write a novel! Now if you will excuse me, I have two days to figure out what my novel is going to be about. I think I need a drink.

  1. Good luck with NaNoWriMo! I always think I’d like to do it but never have the nerve, or the resolve.

  2. Oh how kewl! I’ve always thought that would be neat to do, but never had the fortitude to do it. HOW many words a day is that?

  3. I think this is great! Congratulations!

  4. Good luck, Susan

  5. I am still flirting with the notion. I know how it will start, I know a few key points, but I have NO IDEA how to end it…but 50,000 isn’t a whole novel anyway, so I don’t have to wrap it up in that time, do I?

I’m so tempted, but the other half of me says I’d have to be completely insane.

So, GOOD FOR YOU!!! I’m so impressed by your courage. And yay for Wade for giving you the unqualified go-ahead.

Write on, girl! I raise my margarita (imaginery at the moment…) in your general direction.

  6. Oh, good for you! I did this last year, but I wrote a nonfiction book. And I didn’t really follow the rules because I started ahead of time and finished one draft and then couldn’t stand to look at it again. But I did it!

And I just got hounded today about doing it (but I just CAN’T commit to anymore writing right now).

  7. I am in awe of you! That is so great. Wait, so that means you won’t be having much time to blog, huh?!

  8. Nice. Not only do you have time to mommy, blog, and look hip and stylish, but now you’re writing a novel too???

I think I showered before 4 today. I’m pretty sure.

Good luck, have fun, congrats! Do we get to read it?

Cheers!!!! (tipping a beer bottle in your direction at this very moment!)

  9. I think that what will happen is this: I will give up my random TV watching (no more What Not To Wear) and write then–which should mean that I will have 50,000 words in like a week. No, not really. But I certainly won’t stop writing here–you all are the only adults I talk to most days. Sigh.

And yes, Katy, you MAY get to see what I write–Wade has offered to show me how to link a PDF file (I don’t even know what that MEANS, but apparently it would make it possible for you all to go to the draft from here). We will have to see just how horrible it is first. Don’t hold your breath.

Now I really need that drink.

  10. That’s wonderful! I’m also in awe. Someday when I’m not elbow deep in Desitin Creamy I hope to write more too. Do it for all of us! :-)

  11. did you start the coffee/Redbull/vodka drip yet? You’re gonna need it.

    You go, woman!

  12. So glad I’m not the only one attempting this lunacy!

1,667 words a day. I’m working under the theory that we’ll be able to do it because we *don’t* have the time to do it. Make sense?

    Perfect.

  13. Good onnya Susan. recipie coming soon. Clare

  14. CONGRATS Susan!! You’ll be great!
Good luck, not that you need it.

  15. “I think I need a drink.” Sounds like you’ve got your title already! ;-)

  16. HeatherK, you might be on to something . . .

  17. Good. For. You!!

  18. Ha! You’ve been busted! I’m doing a post on parents who are doing NaNoWriMo, so look for a link back to your site, coming soon!
