apparently, I’m not muttering quietly enough

Charlie is getting dressed; I am making his bed. He is chattering away, and I’m not really listening. At all. But I hear what sounds like a question.

Me: I’m sorry, buddy, were you talking to me?

Charlie: No, Mommy, I was talking to myself.

Me (under my breath): Oh, good, that’s what I need, both of you talking to yourselves all the time.

Charlie: Yes. Yes we will be. (Resumes talking to himself.)

Okay, so I’ve been a little less than fun here the past few days, what with the stress and all, but today will be different! Witness the cutness that is Friday Playdate!

It was 80 degrees here the other day (I hate Oklahoma in the fall) so we went outside and rolled in the leaves, which was great fun (although now the bathtub is full of leaf bits, but whatever). Henry has taught Charlie to get on the swing by himself AND to ‘pump’ his arms and legs. Charlie was very proud of both of these things until he realized that this meant I would no longer have to stand in the dirt behind the swingset for hours on end pushing him; now he refuses to do it himself. Go figure.

Here he is throwing you his gang sign. It’s either a gang of three, or a gang of three-year-olds, I’m not sure which. Either way, Henry is in (and he can consult with Zoey if he needs any organizational tips).

Last night he insisted that I get completely into his bed, under the covers and everything, to read stories (which was dangerous as I am so very tired these days) and when we got to Snuggle Puppy, he sat up and sang the whole song for me. Then we turned off the lights and he put his little head on my shoulder and said, ‘Sing the puppy song, Mama.’ It was so cute.

Our evening ended with the boys yelling ‘Good night, brother!’ from their separate beds and laughing hysterically. Then they fell asleep at 7:45, and I followed at 8:30. The end.

  1. We have a nightly routine with Ella. One of us reads her two books of her choice. Then she “reads” them. Then we all take turns singing the chorus of “Tomorrow” and then we take turns singing the “Wienie Man” song. We do the singing in a darkened room and it is all I can do most nights to not get in bed with her and sleep.

The boys are so darn cute.

  2. Uh, Hausfrau–what exactly is the ‘Weinie Man’ song? (I live in a house full of boys–you can see what I’m imagining . . . )

  3. Wow! I’ve never lived in a climate where it hits 80 degrees in November. I consider Connecticut balmy compared to my living in Wisconsin and Maine. I love it when people say how cold it is outside when it hits 40…

I’m glad your boys have fun together. I sometimes worry because my older daughter really hasn’t shown much interest in her brother at all. At times she can be downright nasty. I hope as the years go by things will get easier. It would be nice to hear squeals of laughter rather than cyring.

  4. at the risk of hijacking, I wanted to say to wallpaper that it breaks my heart regularly that my dd has very little interest in her brother and 90% of any interest she does have, is negative. But then they are 8 years apart.

We all cosleep at my house (well mostly me & Fin) so there’s no routine and frequent crashing in the same bed. THe only thing I do try, is to have him in bed by 8 on school nights.

  5. That’s so cute. It reminds me of the Waltons. :-)

  6. Meegs, My house is JUST like the Waltons (assuming Mrs. Walton ended every day yelling, ‘For god’s sake just get back in bed and go to sleep before my head explodes!’ Which I like to imagine she did).

  7. For some reason, in my head the boys have working class english accents and are yelling “good nigh’ bru-vah!” at one another. Don’t know why :)

  8. Leah, yesterday morning at breakfast they were talking about their waffles in fake British accents. For no reason.

Goodness, you all really DO have a good sense of what life is like at Friday Playdate!

  9. My kiddos were yelling across the hall last night and I took it for a while but then I had to yell, “If you don’t STOP IT RIGHT NOW I’m going to SHUT YOUR DOORS!”

    *Instant* silence.

    Then giggles.

  10. Susan, Lauren told me she wants to join Charlie’s gang.

    And girl makes three.

  11. The BoyChild talks to himself. The other day he and I were in the car alone and I could hear him talking but couldn’t understand what he was saying. I said, “I’m sorry, Honey, were you talking to me?” and he said, “No, Mom, I was talking to myself.”

  12. I think Lauren and the BoyChild are both in. Shouldn’t gangs be really big?
