a little something to take the edge off

Pharmacist: How can I help you?

Me: I called in a refill for my son, and got a message saying that the scrip can’t be filled. I’m just wondering what’s going on.

Pharmacist: Patient’s name? (Looks him up in the computer.) Oh, right! We’re all out of that.

Me: Come again?

Pharmacist: It’s on backorder at the manufacturer. We’ve been waiting about three weeks but we still haven’t gotten any. Apparently they’re just not shipping it.

Me: Okaaaaay …

Pharmacist: You can try giving him a different antihistamine, an OTC, if this is for allergies –

Me: No, see, he takes it for ANXIETY and he’s really having kind of a tough time right now and he really NEEDS his meds and OH MY GOD IS THERE ANY WAY TO FIND SOME BECAUSE WE ARE TOTALLY OUT see my husband spilled the bottle but I was out of town and my OTHER child has a broken arm and it’s been really HARD for all of us and we’re not sleeping very well and –

Pharmacist (stepping back from the counter and putting her hands up in the air in a gesture of what can only be described as alarm): Um, I’ll see what I can do.  You just … stay right there.  Okay?  Okay …

Honestly, I have no idea where Henry gets his anxiety. I cannot even imagine, can you?  You know, with such calm and cool parents.

(Still no meds. Apparently there MAY be a similar drug he can try, but the developmental pediatrician was out of the office yesterday and until we change the scrip we’re just medication free!  Woo!  Which is really not lowering MY anxiety level AT ALL. The end.)

  1. Susan, I SWEAR ON MY CHILDREN’S HEADS that the pill form is TEENY WEENY. Have you thought about trying those? Because I am CERTAIN that’s still being made. He could probably even just chew it up (or you could mash it into applesauce). But Monkey swallows them without water, they are so tiny.

I was just about to offer you our leftover liquid but I realized we don’t have any. :( But ASK about the pills, really.

  2. …just wanted to say that I FEEL for you. We’ve been on the anxiety rollercoaster too.

  3. I feel for you too. I’ve dealt with anxiety issues for most of my life. I never got any medication for it though because it was never severe enough. But when those attacks hit…it’s awful. Best of luck getting some meds!

  4. OMG, that would send us over the edge, if the pharmacy was out of A’s meds. No…wait…that would send ME over the edge. I’m with Mir…try to get the pill form and sneak those down. Ay yi yi!!!

  5. If swallowing pills is an issue, I taught my kids with tic-tacs. No bitter taste if it doesn’t go down right away, and it gets them over their initial reluctance. I had all of them swallowing tablets by 4.

  6. Will your pharmacy not call another pharmacy to see if they have the medication? My pharmacy has done that for me when they were out of a medication - and the other pharmacies that they called were not even part of the same chain, they were totally independent of each other. Seems like your pharmacist would have done that for you.

  7. OMG. They make a MEDICINE for my kids anxiety!? Why oh why have I not been told this by the eleventy million doctors we have seen. Crap. Im so uninformed.

But yeah, see if they have the pills and and if you can crush them? If the pill is small, he might be able to do it. My son takes Claritin for his allergies and the pills are so small he just swallows them fine. You can even hide a pill in a spoonful of whipped cream or pudding. Thats what my mom used to do for me.

  8. Poor Henry. I don’t know if the pill form is an option, but my kids can swallow pills with this cup:
http://www.hangercity.com/pillcup.html. (I just checked my CVS and they don’t have it, but I know we bought ours at a pharmacy somewhere.)

Hope the DP calls you back TODAY.

  9. Oh NO, that would make my anxiety (that I take some lovely pills for) skyrocket. I hope some of the suggestions are helpful.

  10. Just noticed my pill cup link is wonky. You have to cut and paste it and take out the . at the end. Sorry!

  11. I got anxious just reading that. I can’t imagine what Charlie feels like.

  12. One word for Henry…placebo! It doesn’t work forever, but the placebo affect is well documented for short term treatment of anxiety. That might offer some relief temporarily. It is odd how the brain and biochemistry can trick themselves short term. Unfortunately, it won’t last forever :( A week, maybe two.

    One word for you…martini.

  13. I prescribe martinis for everyone!
Back in the late 1960’s, when my husband was a kid with croup, he would get really anxious when he couldn’t breathe (not surprising, really). So the doctor prescribed hard liquor - yes, for the child. The only thing he would drink was Grand Marnier. No generic meds for my hubby!
Lord only knows how much his parents drank while waiting for him to calm down and start breathing again.
    Good luck! With everything!

  14. Awww… poor you and poor kids! I hope you can find some tasty wine to help you with this..

  15. Oh, crud.

We’re a pill family here: put it on the tip (since that tastes sweet, not bitter) and swig the water/juice/milk: the pill sails over the back of the tongue and into the tummy - success!

Seriously, I thought my son wouldn’t be able to swallow a pill, but he could once he tried.

  16. I, like the other commenter, tried practicing with M&Ms until we had the gag reflex in check. Then we ate a whole bag for a reward.

Feeling for ya, babe. That is suck times 10. Of all things to be out of…

Hang in there. Most likely by the skin of your teeth.
